Ani DiFranco: Live at Babeville

Great concert by great performer
So here is Ani DiFranco in her “Preaching to the Converted” tour. You rarely will see a more adoring audience than this one, or who knows the words to the songs better (an impressive feat).I may have to give up my “Guy Card” but have to say I really love Ani as a performer. She is a wizard at guitar, singing, and songwriting, and has that special “It” factor which makes her one of the greatest live performers ever. Some of her far-left positions make my eyes roll. We had to go to war with the British, as they were holding us in tyranny. And asking them nicely to stop, wasn’t working. So thanks to our brave soldiers, we threw over that tyranny, and now just have to deal with the American Government and their endless taxes and regulations and interference in our lives. But back to the show: she has a great, tight, jazzy band here (who uses vibes in pop music?). Everyone is sharp, and the video editing is just right. Very recommended.

America's greatest contemporary poet?
Ani at her best--in fine voice, in a fine venue (a former church she helped to refurb and open as a performing arts center), and best of all, fine spirits, in a lively concert edited down from two nights of performances in front of an adoring audience. She plays both older ("Not a Pretty Girl"), more recent, and totally wonderfully classic ("Little Plastic Castle") Ani songs with a vibraphone, bass, and drum accompaniment. I've already written the Nobel Prize Committee in Stockholm that if they want to get real, she should be "poet of the year" next go round. Genius that he was, it's time to face it that Dylan's time has passed. It's about time for a gender change in any case. I'm only half kidding. She is one of America's greatest contemporary poets. Why not?

Ani Rocks her new temple.
This is a must for fans of her live show. I have seen Ani a handful of times all in various venues and cities with and without a backing band and she is always a force to be reckoned with. She is easily one of the best live touring guitar players. This is no different. The diverse set of songs are played very well with her and this band. Don't read too much into the description. When they say *new arrangements it is nothing extreme and I think all fans will still enjoy every song. This DVD is awesome a great set list including a few tracks that at the time were still new. I can not recommend this more highly.

a great video
This is a great DVD for any Ani Difranco fan. I loved seeing Babeville, the baby, and of course Ani's performance. Most of the old, favorite songs were rearranged on the DVD and I loved that she had revisited them. I thoroughly enjoyed the DVD.

Listen to Stereo PCM not DD 5.1
If you like Ani DiFranco, you should like this DVD.Regarding the sound quality, I much prefer the Stereo PCM 2.0 mix. One shouldn't always assume a 5.1 mix (Dolby Digital or DTS) will be better than the stereo mix. The DD 5.1 mix for this release makes it sound like Ani was playing in a big empty hall... very hollow sounding, with too much audience noise and echo in the surrounds. The stereo mix is completely different without the above complaints, and Ani's guitar is mixed louder. To hear it out of my 5.1 speaker system, I often choose the Dolby Pro Logic II Music mode - as this sounds quite good.Thankfully, the video aspect ratio is widescreen anamporphic, not 1.33:1 as stated by Amazon.
