I am looking for the refillable erasers for the 5639 mechanical pencil

We do not have one specifically for the Rapidomatic but the Koh-I-Noor Mephisto Mechanical Pencil Eraser Refills, White, 10 Per Pack (5035EBC.57) will work but you would need to cut them down. This eraser is 1 5/16" long and the Rapidomatic eraser is 5/16" long. so essentially you get 20 erasers for around $3.00

Are these as good as the old pencils from Japan (30-40 years ago) or more like the cheap ones from China?

These are made in Japan by the same manufacturer that made the original Rapidomatic Pencils.

is there pressure-absorbing spring mechanism in these pencils, aka, cushioned lead?

No, not if you are referring to a self-feed lead system. This design is a throwback to original 5600 series Rapidomatic from the 1990's.

What is the dial for? It came set for HB?

That is so you know what degree lead you are using. It is on HB because it is loaded with HB degree graphite leads. Other degree leads are available. If you use another degree of lead you turn the selector to the appropriate degree.
