Can you make the necklace smaller?

Sorry about that, we can't made this obsidian pyramid necklace samller.

Is this a real crystal?

Looks and feels like it, am not an expert.

Is this real amethyst or just a painted or dyed common quartz?

100% Natural Amethyst Crystal Pendant.

the one I received isn't comfortable as the reviews claim; love the look but the strands off the rope irritate my neck! Is there anything I can do?

I would just change out the cord. Go to a craft store. They have all kinds of cords. Good luck
