Yes, I’ve melted silver and brass with it. It does char the sand so some of it is not reusable but it keeps its shape at high temps

would 10lbs be enough to cast the size of a hand?

Yeah. You don't need a very thick amount around the void if using a steel frame. For heavier metals like copper I would pack a little extra. It sucks together and insulates quite well.

Expensive but worth it. Great detail when you learn to use it properly

Sand works great but I will say to learn what you are doing first. Im having issues with the clay falling into the mold but that is a me issue not packing the sand enough. Expensive for sand but when it is used right it is a good quality casting.
