BELL 4Forty MIPS Adult Mountain Bike Helmet

I really like the fit of this helmet. Most bicycle helmet manufacturer descriptions do not address the rider's head shape. I have found that most of them are designed for a round head shape and an intermediate oval shape at best. Describing the head shape, and manufacturing the helmet to it, is a common practice with motorcycle helmet manufacturers. With motorcycle helmets, I have what is described as a long oval shaped head. By hat size, I wear a 7 5/8 to 7 3/4. I measure at about 61.5 centimeters. Because of the oval shape of my head, most L/XL bike helmets showing a max of 62/63 CM ride high on top of the sides of my head. My head is not fully protected by the helmet. If I force the helmet down with a tightened chin strap, I get the common upper forehead burn within an hour of riding. This helmet fit great out of the box. The wheel adjustment mechanism at the rear of the helmet allows you to tighten it to an exact comfort and fit in both directions (front to rear and side to side.) I tried on numerous L/XL helmets in stores before taking a chance with this one based on other reviewers comments. It is not just a good fit for "big heads," it is great for people with the long or narrow oval shaped head issue.

My last helmet was badly damaged when a car knocked me off my bike. I bought what I thought would add added protection, with MIPs. I've now seen that Consumer Reports has tested the helmet and recommends a do not buy, and replace if owned, due to the retention mechanism failing. It recommends only wear in the absence of another helmet. I will have to return this helmet unopened. It would be nice if the reviewers for bike gear took into account safety features and not just aesthetics. This helmet, it seems, is not suitable for the task for which it is made.

Less than a year old and the pads are worn out. I called Bell and they said the pads aren't available! How can pad kits not be available for a helmet that BELL and AMAZON both still sell? Bell referred me to a company called Weber Sports which confirmed the 4Forty pads kits are DISCONTINUED and Bell then told me to search Amazon for "generic" pad kits where you "trim" pads to fit your helmet. How can a "currently available" product have discontinued replacement pads? Because they want you to throw the helmet in the trash and buy a NEW one. I'll be giving my money to POC now...thank you.

A great helmet is a helmet you put on and don't think about it until you take it of. This helmet has to be continually pushed up on my head as it wants to fall forward constantly.. Could also be from the weight. I understand a mtb helmet is going to take some shaking around, but I'm having to adjust it a lot. A LOT! Also, it is HOT! Summers here on the Carolina coast are hot, but this helmet is much hotter than my last helmet. Coming off a Fox Speedframe Pro. Should have ordered another one of those!

I was looking for a none full-face MTB helmet with a long enough visor to mount my action cam under it. Took a chance with this Bell 4Forty and it worked out awesome! The visor is long enough and has enough space and movement to lift the action cam out of my field of view. The only thing was I had to add velcro to aid in the additional weight. Now I don't have to worry about branches and or brush hitting a top-mounted cam and smacking it off. The Bell 4Forty is also a great helmet on its own for the price point with great ventilation. I purchased a size L and it adjusts to my head comfortably even after I had to make it a little tighter to compensate for the extra front weight. I took it on a pretty aggressive ride recently and functioned exactly how I wanted it too. Note: the helmet doesn't come with Velcro or Action Cam mounts.

My head is quite large, and on top of it, it’s also narrow, which usually means me wrestling with helmets. I was hesitant to purchase this, aftaid it would either still be the wrong size, nit fit my shaped head, or look like a mushroom cap.This is true to size. Measure your head as indicated and buy the appropriate size. I can barely tell that I’m wearing anything. It’s that comfortable. If you’re trying to compare a bunch of helmets, feel confident in choosing this one. Looks and feels great!

Really good helmet; and it happens to be good value too; win, win! Don’t be cheap...get a helmet with MIPS...to save your life. I am pretty sure this one saved mine. This is my second one as I cracked my original purchase, smashing the ground ridiculously hard at speed. Upon inspection after my crash I could literally see how the MIPS liner worked; unbelievable. I ride in tropics and this helmet is perfectly suited for hot weather. Plenty of ventilation and nice and light, looks good, works good. Not much else to say. Thank you Bell...🙏

I bought my first bike a few months ago along with this helmet. After a few rides I fell for my first time and I fell pretty hard. I hurt my shoulder, bruised some ribs and completely messed up my quads. Fortunately for me, I would’ve been in the hospital for at least a concussion, if not something worse, if I wasn’t wearing a good quality helmet. I hit my head on a boulder and the worst I got was a tiny bruise near my eyebrow. The helmet was dented and the foam was cracked so it was compromised, but it absolutely did the job and a great one at that. I decided to buy the same helmet immediately after this fall.

i bought 3 of these helmets for myself and my sons. Pretty good helmet for the price. Comfortable and stylish, they breathe well. Luckily noone has tested how well they withstand a big crash but they were also recommended from our local bike shop where i purchased mine.

I have a large head and it is very hard to find bike helmets to fit me. Bike stores in my city did not have anything that fit. I found This helmet on Amazon it came quickly and it fit well.
