SpiShutter Slim (New) - Magnetic Webcam Cover for Macbook Laptops (Black)

Bottom line: I now have a small shallow scratch on my MacBook Pro’s screen.They give you a warning to make sure and clean everything thoroughly prior to use. I did just that. Hard to explain to folks just how careful I am and how anally retentive I am about the tech in my house. Regardless... I wiped down the 1 week old 2020 MacBook Pro, even though it was spotless, with a high quality microfiber cloth and inspected my work at an angle with overhead lighting. Satisfied, I wiped down the camera cover, which is a very sturdy metallic piece with a matte finish. Looked great when I dropped it in place covering the camera. So I attempted to slowly slide it to the side, while it held on magnetically, to expose the camera. I immediately felt something was dragging and scratching the glass. I had trouble getting my finger nail under the device but was ultimately able to lift it up and inspect. Sure enough I had a very small scratch right where the long edge of the cover had slid a half an inch along the glass. The scratch is above where the display is, but away from the edge of the assembly. There was no dirt or dust. Not even a fingerprint.No I don’t recommend this product.Maybe it was a one-off, maybe it will work better if you have a screen protector, maybe I did everything wrong.

Everything about this product works exactly as advertised and I have no misgivings about using it. The only issue is that (with the new models) it's just a bit too wide in the vertical direction, so you lose a fraction of an inch at the top center of your screen. This is mostly Apple's fault for making laptops that are sized in such a way that webcam covers are very awkward to fit (I guess Apple doesn't care quite as much about privacy as they'd have you believe...), but I figured I would mention it so you're not surprised. Not a problem for me since I always use my laptop with an external monitor anyway.

I loved the SpiShutter Classic on my pre-touchbar MacBook Pro. Super unobtrusive and effective. When I was issued a new 2016 15" MacBook Pro with the touchbar, I ordered the updated SpiShutter Slim. It works, but the hole is not wide enough. The ambient light sensor in the new MacBook Pro is much further away from the camera. When you slide the SpiShutter Slim over to unblock the camera, it covers the ambient light sensor. If the hole were just wider, this wouldn't happen.

I've purchased several of these now, and this one was purchased for my Mac that I was issued at work.I love the fact that the SpiShutter disappears and is not glaringly visible, or look tacky, like a sticky note.I love how easy it is to slide it over when needed for a Skype or FaceTime conference.I love the fact that it uses the magnets inside the MacBook Pro for adhesion, and that it doesn't interfere with closing the lid.In short, it's perfect. The only improvement would be if it were free!

I am also using a magnetic privacy screen and I was concerned about 1) The bulk this may add when trying to close the lid and 2) If the magnet would be strong enough with my privacy screen.I am happy to say that if you place the camera shield first on the magnetic strip of the MacBook Pro and then place the magnetic privacy screen, you will not be disappointed with this product. The additional “bulk” is negligible and the magnets work perfectly. The camera shield is exactly as described in the listing.

If you don't mind the edges of this product scratching your screen up then it works great. This pic was after just 3 or 4 slides left and right. They do have a warning on the back saying in rare cases it can scratch if something gets between the screen and the cover. My mac was literally pulled out of the box as well as the cover and I found nothing between the screen and the cover.

Expensive but works great.

I'm so happy the slim version is now available! It fits perfectly on my MacBook Pro 15" with touch bar. My display brightness is set to manual so it doesn't bother me that it blocks the ambient light sensor.
