Not what I expected but still a good read
I have no survival experience or training whatsoever, I'm just getting started. I read a few reviews of other books and I saw this one mentioned a few times and picked it up based on the good rating. I didn't read ALL the reviews here and I made a critical mistake. Usually when I read product reviews I look at the negative ones (and comments) to see what bad things people have to say about it. I didn't do that so much with this book. All of that is to say that even though this is not the book that I was looking for, it's still a good book - I accept that it's my fault for not fully researching this book. The problem I had with it is that it is more geared towards people who want to spend extended periods of time out in the wilderness as opposed to people who find themselves in a (hopefully) temporary difficult situation. There is still loads of useful information in this book. You will learn things about surviving the wilderness. Another issue I had is focused on the Southwest USA, and I live in the Northeast - quite different climates, flora and fauna. I did read the book and I did enjoy the anecdotes but this will probably be a one-and-done for me.Don't be put off buying this book but make sure it's the book that you want.

Recommended by Robert Redford
I read in an article a few years ago that someone who had read the book were subsequently stranded in the desert. They used the methods he described and were able to survive. I had a copy of the first printing of the book but it was lost during a move so I purchased a replacement. Robert Redford gives a glowing introduction and explains that this book was used for technical advice for the filming of the movie Mountain Man. Anyone who enjoys orienteering would do well to use the methods described in this book. It has been said that ,the survival instructions in this book are better than the training given by the military. The various branches of the military require the soldiers to carry a wide assortment of items, whereas with the skills in this book can be used without any modern equipment.

A Survivor's Library
This is one of three books that belong in your wilderness survival library (inside your wikiup). The others are: Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival by Tom Brown Jr, and, Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills by John & Geri McPherson. The books stand in general agreement as to the skills and techniques, with each one either making it more understandable, more complete or adding a topic or two that the others omit. Skip the Kindle version (if there is one); this one will still work without batteries (and make good kindling for your fires).

this is the one
this is one of the best books on the subject, unlike a lot of sources that cover survival for some one who is lost or needs help, this is more a study in primal living, how we used to do things. I've had the hard copy for years, but it is never with me, my kindle however is. your going to want to read this! its not a dry how to manual, it's filled with relevant stories and miss haps. this will stick with you better then say a military type manual

Best book I've found on primitive outdoor survival skills
I've read many books about primitive outdoor survival skills, and this is by far the best. I bought my first copy in 1977 and have been using it ever since. The instructions are unusually clear and easy to follow. I was able to learn even the most difficult skill in the book by simply reading and doing, never having seen them performed (long before the days of YouTube). This latest edition is even better.
