Wonderful and funny story, but pigs do die
I enjoyed this funny story very much but decided not to give it to my daughter because although Emil's pig is spared, another pig is killed for Christmas dinner. (Not graphic, but still.) There's a part where his sister is singing a little song about pigs being butchered and screaming, which was pretty horrifying. However, I love that the reality of Astrid Lindgren's world is all there in all its complexity, and the theme of "is it right for animals to die for our dinner?" is certainly important to think about. Overall, I'm glad I read it and delighted that it exists, but I decided it wasn't an ideal Christmas gift for my very sensitive, non-pork eating daughter. (I gave it to a different friend who I figured could handle the pig drama.)

Excellent book (more / better pictures would have mde it even better)
I just read Emil's Pranks to my five and half year old daughter a few months ago and she loved that book. I just found this one on Amazon and we started reading it. Both of us look forward to reading a section each night before bed. It is a great book. The only negative is the drawings are not at all as nice as the previous book (which I got when I was visiting Sweden)and this is important specially for younger readers.

Great book!
The Emil series was my favorite when I grew up...30+ years ago. It was wonderful to find it again and see my son's delight in reading it. He is 7 and considers the series to be his favorite "book", asking me to help read it over and over and over... Now we are due to read it to his class!

I bought it for a 4 yr old and the parents said it was too advanced for that age but I think you should read to them ahead of their age to increase their vocabulary and humour.

I read Emil when I was little in Taiwan. The book I had had multiple chapters, not broken apart like this. So my review is more about the Emil story in general than this particular one. Anyway, he is definitely one of my favorite childhood novel of all times. I also love other Astrid Lindgren's books so much. Unfortunate some are not translated into English, such as RASMUS, PONTUS AND TOKER.

Big Fans of EMIL
A friend sent us the copy of Emil and His Clever Pig she read when she was a little girl, and we found ourselves laughing out loud throughout. All the Emil books are a pleasure to read aloud. All three of our boys love the stories, and we talk about him all the time. We've reread them over and over.
