It holds the floss tight enough, it has a toothed grip (may depend on the type of the floss too). The design is great. In my opinion, it is the best floss holder by design. However, it does break quickly; first the clamp, then the grip.

I ran some calculations. If you pay an extra $5 to get 50 meters of their floss with the holder (assuming you're not picky about the floss you use, but they also have a ribbon type they sell with it), and assuming approximately 3 cm of use per day, you'll get 4.5 years worth of daily usage from it. Waxed floss is of course designed to be more slippery, so that may not work as well with the clamping mechanism.

does it hold floss securely? It looks like it locks down onto the floss, if so is it usable with glide ribbon floss?

It tries to hold floss taut and it succeeds to an extent, but not adequately to do your whole mouth. Ribbon floss will work, but I feel that it was designed for more traditional floss. Paro brand floss is not readily available in the US (at least not for a reasonable cost). I wonder if it works better with the floss it was designed for. Paro #1764 Riser floss is recommended on the package.
