As an English major specializing in Ancient poetry, especially epic poetry of the the English and Latin speaking world, I was immediately drawn to the idea of an epic poem which did not originate in the world of the poetry I have become accustomed to. I thought it would be interesting to read an in-depth summary first, and then read the actual poem, since I am not entirely used to Indian culture and ideas/ideals. This book provides the reader not only with a plot-line, but with an explanation of this diverse culture as well. It is a very interesting read and is, as I take it, true to the original. I see it as a must-read for anyone wanting to read the actual epic poem but who is not from India or the surrounding areas.
