Q: How do you dispose of the dust, is it best to just blow it off? This has been messier than my graphite pencils.

These charcoal pencils are great for detail and small drawings and I mainly purchased them for the use of the eraser as a white line effect. I was disappointed thought, with the effects of the white over the black charcoal not being as effective. I use the raw charcoal sticks mostly and have been trained to draw on an easel. Charcoal is soft and does not need to be pressed hard. You shouldn't have a lot of dust in a hard line/soft line technique. Nor should you need an eraser for charcoal. This was just an experiment for me and definitely like the charcoal pencils, not the eraser. In a different technique where one may blend the charcoal afterwards you may use the eraser, but you still shouldn't have to access dust to deal with.

Q: what are the various hardnesses, ie hb, 2b,4b,etc.

HB is the balance between a hard lead and a soft lead. The lead spreads less than a 2b. 2b and less goes into the softer lead which can be messy, but is good for shadows. 2h is a harder lead that gives a stronger line, but gives less lead. Their use goes towards your function. If a line that will most likely not smear then a 2h, a lead that will make darker shadows and spread under a nib, a 2b. For a balance of both, hb.
