I am a male 44inch chest which size should I order , I am thinking Large ?

I am a 42 inch chest.fits well not tight.i would say a large should fit you.Worth the money.

is it ok to machine wash this in any way? softer detergent? or maybe delicates setting? Has anyone washed the gilet in a washing machine

Machine wash at a maximum of 30 c deg. Do not soak. Do not bleach. Do not iron. Do not dry clean. Do not tumble dry. That's what the label has on it.

Does the waiste have an elastic draw string?

It is fitted with a draw string but it is out- of- sight . If you open the gilet the draw string has two adjustable tabs at the bottom.

2 inner patch pockets, are these on each side? If so are they large enough for wallet and phone?

Internally, on the right-hand side, a zip pocket that would take both wallet and phone. On the left-hand side, so secure but easy access, an even larger open pocket, and a zipped pocket for an audio item with an entry for a cable for a headset. All done smartly and subtly.
