Following the success of Quadrivium, Sciencia, and Designa in the acclaimed Wooden Books series, Trivium is a compendium of writings on the classical subjects at the heart of a liberal education, bringing the wisdom of the past into the twenty-first century. The trivium refers to the three liberal arts considered in classical Greece to be the pillars of critical thought: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Following on the success of Quadrivium and Sciencia , Trivium gathers six Wooden Books titles together into a beautiful six-color package that presents ancient wisdom in an accessible way. Trivium will include the books Euphonics , Grammar , Logic , Rhetoric , Poetic Meter and Form , and Ethics . Wooden Books was founded in 1999 by designer John Martineau near Hay-on-Wye. The aim was to produce a beautiful series of recycled books based on the classical philosophies, arts and sciences. Using the Beatrix Potter formula of text facing picture pages, and old-styles fonts, along with hand-drawn illustrations and 19th century engravings, the books are designed not to date. Small but stuffed with information. Eco friendly and educational. Big ideas in a tiny space. There are over 1,000,000 Wooden Books now in print worldwide and growing. Review: Is this as good as the old book? - I would not know how to evaluate whether or not the method of grammar, logic, and rhetoric is as good as it was during the enlightenment. But this is the same style thinking as the enlightenment and it shows. I wish the logic part was expounded upon. The topic deserves more recognition as a window into the divine. Review: Wish I had this as a Kid - If I had had this book when I was growing up, I'd probably have enjoyed writing. It's really enjoyable and informative to read.

The Absolute Best Bathroom Reader
Are you something of a nerd or maybe just curious about everything under the sun? Every short subject in this book is condensed into one or two pages with great illustrations and facts you never knew you wanted to know until you read them. Look at the Table of Contents. This is really good stuff if you use your brain for more than following the Kardashians or watching sports all weekend. This is a couple of minutes of great info compacted into digestible chunks and delivered while you are sitting doing nothing. (Put down your phone!) I read and reread some things that I want to brush up on. Someone did a really good job of compiling all this wisdom, beauty and logic.

Emphasis on style at the expense of some substance.
A good intro for young people potentially, as well as aspiring writers. I do understand the need to stylize these topics for marketing purposes in a time where logic and sense-making are considered uninteresting. I have some gripes regarding the specifics of the content, but for those who would be motivated by nice illustrations and things, this book would be a good start. There are additional books included within besides books on grammar, logic, and rhetoric: euphonics, poetic meter & form, and ethics. More information is usually good, but I would've preferred a book titled Trivium to focus on the trivium proper.

Excellent Content - Great Value
A very short and concise book, it covers six topics: 1. Euphonics (how alphabets sound to a poet?) 2. Grammar 3. Poetic meter 4. Logic 5. Rhetoric (or how to make a point in speaking or writing) 6. Ethics Of these, I particularly liked 2, 4, 5 and 6. These 'chapters' are actually reproductions of slim books available separately (cheaper to buy them together in this binding). Each section is written quite cellars, and serves as good reference / revision if you are already familiar with the matter. If not, it gives you a basic foundation, though it may require careful and focused reading. All the chapters are illustrated in a rather fun way. The writing style is also non-pedantic. Though the book is presented as a classic, the treatment of topics is quite modern and up to date. The binding is rather good - though I found the book a little heavy due to the good quality paper that's been used. The only complaint I have is that the publishers have had a bit too much fun playing around with fonts and typefaces. This can get a little distracting as multiple fonts on the same page make it look cluttered. Some font choices are rather wacky - e.g. a dripping font used for fallacies. Excellent value for money - definitely a book to keep in your collection or to gift to a friend.

Beautiful and amazing.
This book and the accompanying three others are without doubt some of the best and most prized books I have bought and own. They are at once both a wholistic intellectual and visual treat. If not familiar with this style of learning and education one may find it a bit hard going at first but by god is the effort worth it. By wholistic I mean everything taught is related to the others subjects in a way I've never seen before, it opens ones eyes to the majesty of our world, it installs mental discipline, it develops ones ability to reason, think and learn. It the educational foundation such as this that gave us the Renaissance and the likes of Giordano Bruno. You will not regret buying these books, they will change you and change how you see the world. Now to the quality of these books, these are solid hardbacks with sown in sheets produced on really nice quality paper, they will last you many years. I wish I had known about the Trivium et Quadrivium years ago. If these are used by young people their education will increase by leaps and bounds. These books belong in every University, College, Library and home of all self and home educators. Buy, read, learn and enjoy, you won't regret it. 11 October UPDATE: At least one reviewer calls this a Coffee Table Book and in a disparaging manner, yep, it can be used as such though I think the criticism is a bit unfair. It's not meant I think to be a Text Book such as one would find in a Philosophy Course, it's meant for ordinary bods like me and you who're reading this review. It's a great introduction to the basics and is a great foundation plus I would add there aren't many books out on the Trivium covering this subject in an easy digestible manner which is exactly what this book does. Sure, it will take time to practice and for that more advanced texts can be consulted. Seriously, don't be put off by a negative review for this really is a marvellous book as are all Wooden Books for an Introductory Crash Course covering the basics. Still on my recommended list. As someone pointed out it's usually holistic not wholistic, I use the second word purposely. Wholistic refers to a whole or whole body; taking into consideration the whole body or person. Wholistic means considering the mind, body and spirit
