You would want to look up the HLB value (hydrophilic lipophilic balance) of the compound you are trying to disperse into the water. Also you would want to know if you need a anion, cation, a non-ionic, amphoteric, or an organic one like this is which also has many types. This is all so you know whatever you want to dissolve does not react with the surfactants.
