Can this be used on an old diesel tractor with no ignition system? What do you connect this to?

It is simply a clock. Connect it in parallel to any 12V device that is on when the tractor is running. If no such devices exist,then connect it to a 12V - 24V battery thru a switch. Turn it on when you start the tractor and off when stop.

No it is not back lit. Need to mount where it is easy to see.

What is the real size required for mounting? previous answers vary from 1.3 t0 1.5 to 1.8. which is it?? anyone have a ruler?

I see you claim these are not water proof, but can it be used on a riding mower when it occassionally be in the rain?

I had one of these hour meters on my flats boat (salt water) for nearly 10 years with no issues. I replaced it with one from Amazon because I had the powerhead on the motor replaced, so the hour meter had to be zeroed out. I expect this replacement model to last.
