The Trinity In Ancient Art Touching Our Modern Lives.
A Russian icon painted in the early 1440s by artist Andrei Rublev is the basis for this theological study of the Trinity entitled The Hospitality of Abraham.Using this ancient icon Smith takes you on a journey of coming to better understand the Trinity and the role of art in provoking our thinking about our relationship with God. First noting that his interpretation is not necessarily what Rublev had in mind as he painted it is a detailed look at a way to use this painting to reflect on the relationship between the different parts of the Trinity, Holy Spirit, Son and Father.Just as important is looking at the other parts of the painting and how they might speak to us today as we reflect on Jesus and our relationship to him through the Holy Spirit. As with most works of art there is more there than we usually see in the first look and this gives you an opportunity to look at both a piece of art and the Trinity in ways you may not have done before.Whether you think of icons as works of art or not he gives you plenty to think about how God uses things we often set aside as unusable. There is a lot of food for thought here worth taking the time to explore something old with new eyes.

revelatory Rublev
Pastor John has always been an expositor with a unique perspective. His interpretation of Rublev's masterpiece is true to form. At first blush it seemed as though he was approaching the subject of the Trinity backwards. As usual, he was spot on. I purchased the book in September but saved it for my Maundy Thursday reading. What a perfect day to become immersed in contemplation about our God. Insights and inspiration abound making my grasp on the nebulous concept of three in one more clear. This reads easily and questions for reflection or group study deepen the understanding. No doubt I will re-read and dwell longer many times.

The surprise personalization at the end
Love the authors interpretation of this painting! Well written and easy to read. Obviously written by someone who breathes God in in the morning and holds that breath all day! Reading it for the second time! Wonderful book to refocus the mind!
