Inside diameter 2.0 inches, outside diameter 2.25 inches (I just measured these parameters). I also have a coupling that binds the extension hose to the original Shopvac hose. I think I bought that separately but I am not sure. The inside diameter of that coupling is 2 3/8 inches. The outside diameter of that is not relevant as it does not fit into anything. The other ends of the original and extension hoses fit into it to join them. **Q: Will this fit my 5989600 out of the box?** A: All I know is that this hose fits my old Sears shop vac, which is the standard 2-1/2 inch size.
