For Laika: The Dog Who Learned the Names of the Stars

One of the most beautiful children’s books
I cried the first time I read this book. The story is so beautifully told and illustrated. I appreciated that it treats children like real people with a full range of feelings and emotions. I also loved that it found a wonderful way to bring a complex subject and fascinating piece of history to young minds. Children are so much smarter and have so much more empathy than they are given credit for.In this time of the pandemic, when many people, young and old, are dealing with loss, this book offers a gentle way to introduce the concept of losing a loved-one, but also holding on to the joy and hope that their life inspired. It’s also a good way to introduce the difficulties and conflicts that arise from scientific research.I already have two copies of this book and will definitely be buying more to give as gifts. This is another winner from this talented duo. I hope they write many more.

A beautiful story that touches on history
Such a unique story based on an important (though not talked about) part of history. My younger children were drawn to the unique illustrations and the magical like storytelling. While my oldest was able to have a more in depth conversation with me about the history of Laika
