Snails need Moss wafers or pure algea, These have to high a protein for the best health of your snails.

They go underwater I guess they would eventually resolve if the fish did not eat them

I don't think there is anything a goldfish won't eat. Mine love them.

Does it hurt the other fish?

No, not directly but if you put to many wafers in the tank and they set there for days it will degrade your water quality. Which in turn, will hurt your fish. Put just enough that will be eaten in a few hours.
