Inspiring
Along with Diane's web site tutorials, her book is a great review and more. Retired with a disability I turned to oil painting as part of my pass time. Trying to improve that skill I realized I needed to become better at drawing. Then I discovered Diane and was amazed at her work. What has really intrigued me is how three dimensional her work is, made with subtle changes in values using pencil. One of the things I like most about Diane's book is how she explains the step by step process of achieving very believable landscapes.

Kudos for Diane Wright/Shame on "Walter Foster"
This is a very well written and illustrated book on drawing for any new artist, particularly the landscape artist. In fact, I would say that it is a "must have," with all the tips and techniques it includes for texture and special effects. It is the kind of book you want to tuck away and take with you. Reading it and practicing what is taught will give anyone plenty of opportunity to improve their art. Pencil can be a thrilling medium for both the artist and the viewer. It is one of the few that invites the viewer into the work as an active participant. It talks to each person in their own visual language. Diane Wright does a wonderful job of not "drawing down" to her students but of pulling them up to their own potential.Along comes "Walter Foster" publications. They have been publishing art instructional manuals for eons; some good, some horrendous. Here comes Diane Wright, an outstanding pencil artist, offering high quality pieces, easily understood instruction and excellent insight for this publication. Really good pencil artist/instuctors, such as she, are not that easy to come by. What does "Walter Foster," do? Instead of publishing them in a large enough format that people can easily see the value shifts and easily see the changes in the refrence drawings, they publish them in a "9 1/2 x 6 1/2" book where the demos are "3 1/2 x 5 1/2." And the book is only 64 pages long from stem to stern. Diane Wright's work deserves a much larger venue. I would have had my students purchase this book at twice it's size and price just so they could comparatively study good work and a differing style. The size of this one, unfortunately, does not honor the artist. The content, particularly value shifts in landscapes, when you can see them, is outstanding, but they can be VERY hard to see.(Capitals to "Walter Foster," Are you listening? Why publish and instructional book that is too small to properly demonstrate? This is Landscape not Portrait work. All you do is frustrate the purchaser.)Again, Mega Kudos to Diane Wright. I hope I come across some of her work in a larger format. And, I thank her for the obvious effort she put into creating this piece of art. It's clear that her intention was to create something accessible and readily useful to the student. Shame on Walter Foster for not fully providing that opportunity. But get this anyhow. Diane's skill transcends Walter Foster's error and I found this book very useful in it's own right. I doubt that anyone else would be sorry, either.

Excellent Reference
If there is any great subject to be drawn, landscapes are certainly great choices. Just look around, pick one that really makes you happy, and put it right down on paper! Ideas are really everywhere; you only have to look to see them.

Lightweight and Formulaic
Like many so-called art instruction books this offering contains many plates of the artists lovely work which is well beyond the ability of a beginner to copy. It contains the usual lack of "meat and potatoes" instruction. However, it includes the standard list of recommended materials no-one really needs. I would not recommend this book to anyone really as it has no real educational merit for either the beginner or the expert.

A bit small, but otherwise a very good book
Excellent to brush up on pencil/graphite skills and even pick up some helpful techniques for rendering different things one might find in a landscape drawing done in graphite only. Great addition to my already extensive ArtBook library.

I have several art books that I read and make reference too. This one has been extremely helpful to me. Lots of great tips and techniques. It's a must have!

Not worth the price...
Diane Wright is an excellent artist, but it appears she is not about to supply much more than an exhibition of her own skills. She would have done better if she had taken one project and presented a detailed, comprehensive lesson including the skills (with exercises) necessary to complete it.This book is too short and too thin on instruction to warrant a price of just a few dollars. Save your money and search for free lessons on the internet.

Inspiring and helpful
Diane Wright's obvious love of her subjects and her art make this an inspiring read. I found it stimulated me to think about new ways of looking at things and to re-examine my techniques. I enjoyed being taken behind the scenes as it were to see her putting a picture together.I believe anyone interested in drawing, whatever their skill level, could gain something from this short affordable book.

very small
I wasn't expecting that small and very little pages. There are not many landscape drawings to learn. My 9 Year old daughter did not like it.
