I did take the silicone piece out because it doesn't seem worth an extra thing to clean. Perhaps this advice will not be popular, but I have found that addressing the issue of my twins not throwing the bottles is a battle worth fighting. Getting hit in the foot by a dropped bottle hurts! I will continue to buy this product to extend the life of the glass baby bottles. One finally cracked after about two years of use, just throwing them in the dishwasher, and my son throwing them on the hard floor multiple times. I have ordered them 5x in the past two years (that’s ten caps), and every single one has broken. They haven’t gotten lost. They’ve cracked and become unusable with the slightest drop (my two year old, like most, isn’t tall.) Amazon, kindly, has replaced 1 set, but of course, I had to call customer service and go through that rigamarole...would rather the caps simply not break. We do have slate floors, but they are only sometimes the location of the fall. Almost any drop on any floor save carpet can crack these caps, but the bottles survive. In fact, we’ve only broken and replaced ONE bottle compared to the TEN caps. And that’s because it fell from my shoulder height while I was carrying my son over the slate floor. Needless to say, it’s pretty pitiful how easily the caps break. I suspect it’s because the plastic is BPA free, which I appreciate and is one of the reasons why I keep buying them. The other reason I’m beholden to this awful cap is because my two year old latched on to this particular bottle brand as his lovey— cute except now I’ve spent $45 in caps alone and need more so he can sleep tonight. Please send me more, Amazon. And please redesign these, Lifefactory— they are the worst. I wish I’d saved and photographed each one: they break almost the same way in a spiral every time. I even finally bought another color (kale) to see if it was intrinsic to the blues. Nope.
