It will hold any phone. But, the magnet has to be onthe outside of the vase

Q: Will this hold a tablet?

Can not say for sure, but the the construction is good and durable, suction cup holds fast and magnet is strong

Q: Will this work with the metal under a case? With the magnet being so strong will it cause damage to the phone?

It works with the metal plate under the case but not as good as on the outside of the case. I've been using magnetic mounts for year and never had an issue with any of my phone.
