#6, #8, #10, #12 refer to machine screw sizes. It is an old standard, but still used today in sizing screws that are smaller in diameter than 1/4".

Q: Does the #6 refer to width of the head or the thickness of the screw length? I bought these but they are not 'thick' enough. Not worth return costs

The #6 refers to the thread diameter, which for a #6 machine screw is 9/64".
