Q: Can these be used for speakers?

If you're talking about sending a low-power line-level or mic-level signal to an active (powered) loudspeaker, then yes, these would be ideal. However, if you're talking about sending a high-power speaker-level signal from an amplifier to a passive (un-powered) speaker, then NO, you should never use an XLR plug for that. That signal can be several hundred or even thousands of watts. XLR plugs are not designed to handle that kind of power flow.

Q: How is the shielding? Are these solid metal, pot metal, or plastic textured to look like metal?

Without getting to involved, the shielding quality is dependent on the balanced cable being used. any decent cable is going to perform well. As far as the metal quality goes, the material is solid, stable and better than most in its price range or higher. Good value for the price.

Q: Are they similar to the neutrik kind that lock the wire from pulling it out?

Yes. I also found that the chore of soldering was easy. They held up well to high temps.

Q: Do these connectors have an internal strain relief component to them?

Yes! Very similar to neutrik but the plastic secondary (outside) strain relief is a bit thinner than the more expensive models. Its a good part and you're getting more for the price. The internal strain relief mid-high quality plastics. I just rewired my black box theatre's audio system and these work perfectly well.
