Want to know how much you're saving?
The bits are great, typical Freud quality thats hype actually aligns with the actual performance. I went through the trouble of pricing all these bits out individually and it came out to about $320. The one caveat being that some of these exact bits do not seem to be available anymore individually, Freud now only sells the quadra-cut versions of a few of them. Same cutting profiles, just a different blade setup on the quadra-cut versions. Conservatively, it's about $100 dollars less to buy this set over the individual bits by themselves. This is not taking into account the beautiful case they come in. Frankly, I'm amazed at how solid and well-build it is. The "issue" with bits fitting too tightly and being hard to remove has been addressed elsewhere, along with it's fixes, so I won't go through all that again. This is an issue you should be glad to have, otherwise these reviews would be repleat with sob stories of people receiving loose and damaged bits. I would honestly pay $50-$60 just for the case. I may try and reverse-engineer it to make one for all my one-off bits. The case has keyholes in the back for hanging, so it was designed and built to display and last. The case and bits are quite heavy (maybe 8-9 lbs?), Amazon put virtually no padding in the box with this set and there isn't a dent or flaw anywhere. My only complaint, is that this set includes no literature. Why is that important? Well, the max rpm to run these bits at, seems to be marked nowhere. It's 2021, this seems an absurd oversight since.....you know...lawsuits. If you bought a fixed speed router and this set, one might assume you can just throw these bits in anything and go. You can look them up individually, which I will. Not a deal-breaker and still a great value for a great set, just hard to imagine why they couldn't include a folded up paper insert with max rpm for each bit. Better yet, they could have put it on the case on the description of each bit. If you weren't interested in this set, I doubt you'd be reading this right now. Since you are reading it, just go ahead and hit that "add to cart" button already. You can look up the speeds and your upper body is begging for some sanding relief from using el-cheapo router bits. You've earned it, treat yourself.

Best 1/2" router starter bit set...
I have to say, Freud makes some great blades, and bits. I needed an Ogee bit and round over for a Dewalt 1hp router (that does 1/4 and 1/2" bits). And reviews on YT said that 1/2" is better for cooler cuts and less speed on the wood. I use Freud bits (1/4") already for some trim work and never was dissatisfied with the results. I also have full sets of 1/4" bits (Stanley) that none have any bearings, resulting in burn marks along the work. This set was priced a little more than some woodworking sites, but those sites were charging much more for shipping, along with ship dates 3-4weeks out. I have a project I need to finish and a month would not do. Pros: solid and sharp bits, no chewing up wood or burning. Quality metal and fine cuts right out of the box. Cons: you can get cheaper bits but you get what you pay for. The case they come in is difficult to remove the bits from. But I wouldn't rate it bad for the bits. Note: I had same issue removing the bits from the "made in Italy" display case. The Freud router bits are recessed in a rubber/nylon? grommet (see pictures). I wore leather work gloves and could not get them to budge out. I didn't want to use my pliers in fear of damaging the bits, finish or the case. So instead, I sprayed some penetrant oil along with Ballistol oil. Then, using an unworn glove and pliers with jaws grabbing through the leather glove, I was able to remove each bit. Coating the inside grommet, along with the shank of each bit, allows easy removal. No need to drill out the holes. Instead, keep the bits oiled (light Ballistol coating) when storing is good practice. If I have hard time later, I might just run some emery cloth on the shanks to take a 1/1000 off for easier storing. I would like to contact Freud about this as these are really great bits and the presentation is nice. Just the execution of removing them is really frustrating (to those unaware) and could result in cuts to hands. All in all, great bit set to start routing with that will outlast the owner.

Great bits. Good box. Good price.
Not made clear from newer reviews but the plastic storage inside the old box has been replaced with swiveling wood block shelves and sturdy plastic grommets now hold the shanks in place. This will prevent slippage in transit and my bits arrived in perfect shape. Inside the box was a rather large dessicant packet and the bits showed little or no rust. Six bits had some rust at the tail end of the shank, but that's all. The box itself isn't the highest of quality but will work and is better then shrinkwrap on card which is how some other high-priced sets arrive. I ordered my set from Amazon seller RouterBitWorld and upon arrival I found a purchase order that showed RouterBitWorld had placed the order directly from Freud America of N.C. One can assume it's relatively new and thankfully never got the chance to sit and rust in a retailers warehouse. The accompanying mini-poster is a nice addition and the mini-cd is also decent, but you're going to need a computer to play the video clips within. The disc shows Quicktime 6 requirement to play... Quicktime 6 came out in 2002, so we're seeing some old material here. I don't think it would kill Freud to reauthor this disc to a full-size DVD for easier access to the information. Anyway that's a minor point and not worth a mark down. In the end the bits are what matter and they are fantastic and well made. After my thorough research they were the best starter set for the money and quality. You can go cheaper and get more quantity, lower quality or the opposite and pay more for fewer bits. For me this 13-piece set was the sweet spot and the more expensive bits I couldn't justify for a hobby and I'm really not sure realistically how much better they can get.

The storage was nice looking, but difficult to remove and put back bits. Very sharp cut quality, good product.

If you have never used a Freud 1/2 shank router bit, you may not want to start: all your other bits will look bad afterwards. The box is excellent, the bit are extraordinary quality. No tearout, smooth, well balanced, and the 1/2 shank is amazingly stable. (also a lot easier to load-up than fiddling with the adapter). Shipping was a little extreme, there were 4 levels of paper/cardboard and shrink-wrapping. I guess the guy in the warehouse is a Freud fan too. For a 6 piece set this as an amazing price. I paid 100$ cdn, and I kept thinking it was too good, that they wouldn't send that. But I got them! The display box is very well made and a very useful touch (not high craftsmanship, but for storage in my workspace it is a great box). I will (eventually) make boxes like this for the bits I have bought over the years that didn't come with one. It keeps them safe, in their place, and easier to find when they have matches. I would definitely buy again, and if I had to offer a gift to someone who uses this kind of bit, I know I would do it in a heartbeat!
