We catch rainwater in IBC tanks then transfer it to the portable tank. The #40 mesh seems to be about the right size for this. When the tanks develop algae, chunks of it that come loose can clog the pump. We do have screened gutter and a screen in the inlet of the IBC tank to prevent trash from getting in the tanks. The screen requires cleaning every few loads because it develops a layer of algae if the tanks have not been cleaned recently. Our transfer pump got damaged because something inadvertently got in the portable tank and got caught in the pump causing it to run with excess load so this was installed.
