Bon Tool27-306 RiverWorks Model 12451 Straight Pen Driving Hammer

This has been incredibly useful in drawing out material length wise. The driving section is nice when using tooling such as punches or chisels.

It's not easy to find straight peen hammers, so I grabbed this one. And I feel ... Strange. If it were solid it would be faced weighted beds Se of the length of the face side. But the big hole through the peen makes it almost like a dog's head. It makes using the peen end very difficult

It's relatively cheap but I'm not sure what the hole on the cross ping side is for. In my opinion it unbalanced the head. Overall it's ok for the money

Who on earth thought a hole through the middle was a good idea?Seriously, what is wrong with you? It's a centuries old design, and you thought it needed changing?

The hole is for screwing the typical galvanized 10 inch pole climbing spikes into telephone and power poles. These spikes have a 90 degree turn in the unthreaded end that fits in the hammer's hole. If you are a lineman, this is your hammer.

Was heavier than I thought and unbalanced. I cut an inch and a half off the round portion of the hammer and use the straight peen all the time for drawing out rail spikes. Now it’s a go to tool for my blacksmith shop

The hammer has good weight and it seemed to perform well on the flat face. The vertical Pein however deformed and the corners mushrooms back somewhat easy
