LIFELONG INSPIRATION
WHEN I FIRST HEARD SHAWN PHILLIPS SING AND PLAY HIS GUITAR, IT TOOK SEVERAL TIMES TO REALIZE THAT HE WAS ACTUALLY REAL (YES, IT WAS THE SEVENTIES), AND NOT A WONDERFUL DREAM INDUCED BY THE MAGICAL NORTHWEST RAINFOREST THAT I LIVED IN AT THE TIME. TRANSCENDENT AND SEEKING WOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO SUMMARIZE WHAT THIS ARTIST HAS MEANT TO ME AS A FELLOW MUSICIAN AND SPIRITUAL SEEKER.AS AN AMATEUR, I HAVE CHOSEN WHAT I FEEL ARE THE BEST SONGS FROM THE OCCASSIONAL OUTSTANDING ARTIST, MADE THEM PLAYABLE FOR ME AND SHARED THEM WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. "KINGS AND CASTLES" HAS DWELLED WITHIN THIS OLD SINGER FOR DECADES. ONE OF THESE DAYS, ARTHRITIS WILL STRIKE, MY VOICE WILL LOSE SHAWN'S RANGE, TRANSPOSING WILL NOT WORK, AND I SHALL BE SILENCED. BUT UNTIL THEN, PEOPLE WILL AT TIMES HEAR AGAIN THIS LOVELY SONG. THEN AGAIN YOU COULD JUST BUT THE ALBUM!THANKS, SHAWN, FOR SHARING YOURSELF WITH THE WORLD. I WISH YOU WELL.

Overlooked 70's gem
Every cut on this album is great and the remastering sounds excellent. "Bright White"- the title track, is the Top 40 single that should have been (but wasn't). "Technotronic Lad" is another one of my favorites (too bad that the acoustic version that Shawn performed on "Midnight Special" wasn't included as a bonus track on this Wounded Bird reissue CD). You can't say that the guy didn't try to get more mainstream attention with this offering when it was released.

classic Shawn Phillips
I was really happy to see Amazon offering the MP3 downloads for some of Shawn Phillips work from the '70's. This is one of my favorite albums. The production quality seemed better with this one, I'm sure it's remastered. Lady of the Blue Rose - so fine!

Awestruck
I first heard Shawn in the mid-seventies at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. I was awestruck by his performance that night. He was solo and had a couple of guitars in stands and just took turns blowing my mind with his incredible vocal range and guitar playing abilities. He stopped during his first set and said "how ya'll doing" in his Texas drawl, and I was intrigued with his presence immediately. If you have not listened to his albums do yourself a favor. It is akin to hearing Jimmie Spheeris for the first time. Magical.

A fantastic re-discovery from my past
Throwing out the many cassettes that I recorded donkeys' years ago and which had disintegrated to the point of being unlistenable, I stumbled across this album. I remembered it for its wonderful inventive music and so although I continued with the de-cluttering, I ordered the CD (the clutter thereby simply changing shape!). I wasn't to be disappointed; the music remains as fresh and surprising as I remembered it and I have played it on many occasions since. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys music with a difference, on this occasion played by a great guitarist with an unbelievable vocal range.
