Yes, it is suitable for using just with a phone or camera without anything.

can you mount directly to tripod, without a ring light?

I don’t think so. The ring light has a “square shaped insert” to slide in your phone holder for stability. It also needs to tighten so that the piece doesn’t move (esp if your phone is too heavy). Without the square shaped base, I’m not too sure what else will hold up your phone.
