Q: Therapy dogs are not the same as Emotional support or Service animals. Can someone clarify the misinformation stated on this tag?

In the pictures available, they show the differences between all three, but I’ll explain anyway. ESA and Service dogs are required to be “prescribed” by a licensed psychiatrist/therapist or doctor with a letter to be protected by federal law. They do not need to be in a special registry, but do need to be trained for public and tasks. ESA: emotional support animals can house in no-pet housing and can fly in cabin with their handler. That’s all they can do. They provide emotional support to mainly one person and are trained to help said person using techniques such as deep pressure therapy. Service dog: housed in no-pet housing, fly in cabin with handler, allowed in public areas such as restaurants. Must be specially trained to behave in crowded public areas and is trained to help and react to one specific person. Service dogs can aide someone with physical health issues or mental health issues (psychiatric service dog). Therapy dog: Trained to help many people to provide support, allow hugs. Not protected by law.
