Is the shell holding the kindle hard, smoot plastic or does it have a rubber consistency for better grip?

Not sure if you mean does it grip the Kindle well? Yes, it does OR can you grip it well? Mine has a grainy textured surface so I have not had any concerns about dropping it tho the tiny extra width is less good for my hand span.

Will this case work with a 6” 2017 kindle paper white please?

My kindle is 17cm x12 cm and it fits just right . Think yours will fit in but it will be loose inside the case. Maybe if its the same width it will hold it. Send for it and see. They are good cases and Amazon are great on returns.
