You would need to remove the old one, trace it over the new one, cut it and install the new piece. I do not think you should install the new one over the damaged one. Look at videos on youtube or details on the amazon page on the product for instructions. **Q: I need to replace a ge advantium "ceramic" piece about 1" square with a screw hole in the middle. is the mica material strong/stiff?** A: We traced the shape we needed to replace the piece we needed in our microwave . We were able to cut it with scissors. You have to put a lot of pressure on the scissors to be able to cut it. It fit perfectly and our microwave is running perfectly. We saved purchasing another one. **Q: What is the max temperature that these can be used at?** A: It is the same thickness as the mica plate you are replacing. Before we took the microwave in for maintenance, I decided to check online for alternatives and voila - found this cheap and easy solution. I wasn't sure if it was going to work, but a few weeks of daily usage later and no sparks! The boards were more than big enough and were easy to cut after tracing my original cover (just be careful not to bend it, it feels like it could snap). I couldn't see how badly burned it was until I saw the inside. I've included pictures of the before and after. I did slightly sand down the metal where it was burned using high-grit sandpaper, just to be sure there were no peaks, but I can't know if that made a difference. Bottom line: try this before repairing or getting a new microwave.
