Q: will this lower my ridiculously high KH w/o the need to keep dosing my tank, but just the replacement water during water changes?

If you look on the container it states it converts KH into CO2. Your KH is what helps keep your PH from lowering, so in order to lower your PH you will need to lower your KH first. This acid buffer is mostly used in tanks with plants. That way they can remove the excess C02 from the water. Word of caution: if you don’t have plants, and use too much then you'll have a lot of CO2 which will cause a quick change in PH and will more than likely kill off any fish. An easier but slower way to lower your KH is by getting distilled water, using a reverse osmosis system or a deionization filter and doing water changes that way. It will take more time but works well as there will be no GH or KH in that water which means lower PH. Keep in mind if you are using tap water, the water may be high in KH and it won't help to replace with that.

Q: Does this work on soft water?

This changes the PH, it doesn't matter if the water is hard or soft.
