How thick is it? Is it really thin?

Not really thin, although not thick like some. This is a basic mattress cover.

Ever since the kids brought home scabies, we layer a 2mil plastic sheet between the mattress and the topper/pad. Guaranteed waterproof!

I need a mattress cover that is held on with elastic straps

IKEA sells mattress protectors and pads which are held in place with straps. I just got one. They’re available on their website and in their stores. I saw some IKEA ones with straps on Amazon too.
