How in the world do you shorten the chain?

You just bend the link open where you want the chain length to be and slide the chain off the wire. You can rebend the link to close it. You can use about anything to bend the link, but two pairs of pliers are the easiest. Also you will have to shorten the wire. BTW its been a couple of years, but we really like the fixture.

What would be the absolute shortest this could be modified to hang?

That totally depends on the person hanging it up. I don't recommend directly to ceiling.

what is th dimension of the box for shipping?

Unsure of the dimensions, but its a great light for the dining room. The only catch is the directions are nonexistent, and you better be handy with wiring or you're not going to be happy.

Can this be installed outside under a covered area?

That is up to you. I wouldn't. But that's me.
