It's like a toaster for your head
I picked up the black extra warmth fleece and the black air flow variants. The extra warmth fleece arrived first so I took it out jogging the next morning just to test it out. It was roughly 25 degrees Fahrenheit on a cold January morning in the northeast and it didn't bother me one bit. Within 3 minutes, my body heat turned it into a toaster. Roughly 5 minutes after that on my second mile, I was sweating so I had to take it off. I've yet to test out the black air flow but definitely DO NOT use the extra warmth if you plan on using it for jogging. Get the black air flow instead. Only use the extra warmth if you plan on being passive in the cold (e.g. social events, or skiing, or climbing Mt. Everest). One another reviewer said he was comfy in -30F temperatures and I believe him. The inside is fleece and you will melt like butter in the oven.... seriously, it's that good and the intended function. If you are more intolerant of the cold, then this might be for you. Normally I can stand the cold just fine but exposed skin does get a bit uncomfortable in the cold over time and I wanted to experiment with all these different variants. What I like about this mask is that it's adjustable - you can either cover your mouth and keep your head exposed, vice versa, or cover up everything. There's plenty of excess fabric so you can tuck it under your shirts. The fit is great - not too tight or loose. Breathing with the mouth and nose covered is manageable - not too hard but it's obviously easier to breathe with it not covering your chin. You might look like a bad guy but at least you'll be warm. It's a great purchase and I highly recommend it. I'm definitely going to hold onto it and use it if I ever have to go skiing in Antarctica during the night.

Wind block lining would be great for snomobilers etc.
Just received this mask. I haven't had a chance to test it in real cold yet but my wife and I have a couple of other masks from this company and are very happy with them. This mask is a little different in that there is an actual wind barrier lining if the front of the mask. If you mouse over the image the area that has the very small holes in the fabric is where the lining is used. The exception is the mouth area which allows for easier breathing. The mask is very comfortable and the design allows for wearing an additional head covering or hood. It is long enough to tuck into coat etc. The face mask part pulls down easily and when worn up covers everything nicely. The inside of the material is described as fleece but it is not a coarse texture, more like a microfiber. It is very soft and comfortable. I started out buying a different mask from this company as a x-mas present for my wife. She does not tolerate the cold well and didn't feel the mask I bought her would be warm enough in the extreme cold. I mentioned this in my review and the company immediately contacted me and suggested a different mask. The new mask was more of a traditional hood type with a drawstring and the ear covering area was double layer. It's kind of like a real long turtle neck that covers the face and ears and then the hood pulls up over that. She is very happy with it. The company contacted me again to make sure we were happy with the different mask for my wife and asked if would try out this new mask. I received it free of charge. I can honestly say that all three of the masks are very well made, comfortable and warm. Basically three designs that are a little different that might work a little better for different things. What really impresses me is the great customer service from this company. They really do want happy customers.

Very decent. Would buy again
Pros - I have been working outside loading and driving trucks and this mask has been my saving grace! Keeps my entire face warm and my neck after tucking it into my shirt. Good ventilation from the mouth part and decently comfortable. Sometimes I don’t even wear the hood part and just use the mouth guard with my ears covered Cons - the comfortability of this mask was decent until I started wearing it for extended lengths of time. The sides pinch my ears a little and make them hurt slightly. Not the biggest deal, nothing quickly rearranging the mask won’t fix but it is a con. Also if you breath through your nose a lot the air will come up slightly out of the bottom half of the mask into your eyes just a little bit. Again not the biggest deal as I would imagine that happens with a lot of these types of masks. All in all solid buy in my opinion

An excellent upgrade to the Self Pro windproof Balaclava
This is my third Self Pro Balaclava, I have already owned and used the Balaclava - Windproof Ski Mask - Cold Weather Face Mask Motorcycle Neck Warmer or Tactical Balaclava Hood. Ultimate Thermal Retention in the Outdoors Super Comfortable Hypo-allergenic Moisture Wicking and Balaclava Fleece Hood - Windproof Face Ski Mask - Ultimate Thermal Retention & Moisture Wicking with Performance Soft Fleece Construction, Black, One Size extensively. I use these masks to walk/run 5/6 miles at a time in very cold weather. This new mask is an improvement on the original windproof mask design. The individual segments of the mask and seams are placed differently, which makes it feel as if the mask was custom made (at least to me). The inside of the mask is lined with a very soft material that makes it even more effective at keeping warm and dry. The best change so far is the front of the mask: it has additional material on the nose/mouth area, it makes it a lot easier to breathe but at the same time it stays dry (the original mask gets damp if you are a mouth breather). The shape of the head area is perfect for wearing under a cap. The way the seams changed also makes it a lot easier to route headphone cables outside of the mask. I wear a wireless Bluetooth headset that loses connectivity if I wear it inside of a mask. With the previous design it's a bit hard to route the cable, with this new design there's a bit more room due to the way the fabric flaps over the ear. I have used this mask down to around 25 degrees Fahrenheit adjusted for windchill and I was always extremely comfortable. Update: January 2018: I have now worn this mask during negative windchill (my worst one so far has been -4° F), and I am still very comfortable. I have been running in < 10°F for the past week without issues and the windchill doesn't seem to be a factor as long as I remember to wear the mask so it covers my eyebrows, unlike how I wear it in my photos.

Comfortable, breathable, and great form. Just what I wanted.
I purchased two Self Pro balaclavas prior to a winter sailing trip in the Pacific Northwest. I tried the two different versions, on two different, but similarly cold days. This was a really comfortable balaclava. I had a read a few reviews that favorably mentioned Self Pro so I decided to try it out and I'm glad I did. Overall, the entire thing is really comfortable and easy to wear. It doesn't have a bunch of excess material that gets bunched up and fits the shape of the head well. A really good ninja mask! My other purchase had an integrated structure built in to it, but this one was the same material throughout. I actually liked this one more. It was really easy to wear, and I didn't feel like I had any issues breathing through it. While out on the sailboat the air was cold while the wind was blowing but while wearing this, my face never got cold, and it worked really well against the wind. I'd definitely buy another one of these if I felt like I needed to, but this one works so well I'm not sure I'll need any more balaclavas!

If you pull the mask under your chin, you'll loose elasticity in the fit.
I purchased this product specifically to use while walking my dog in cold Michigan winter temps. It kept me warm as advertised. I really only have a couple issues with it. I plan on keeping this mask, but for reasons below, I don't think I will purchase another for myself. 1. The first is the mouth\breathing vent. I wish it was a little bigger in width and height as the seams when my mouth was open was right directly on my lips. This may only bother me as I am autistic and have sensory processing difficulties. 2. The other thing is when I pulled the face covering down under my chin to remove my earbud, when I put the mask back in place it was all stretched out. I slowly went back to shape, but it was not as tight of a fit as before. (photo is prior to me pulling it down under my chin) I feel for a product that shows in photos that you can uncover your face, it shouldn't affect the wear. It should be just as stretchy from wear 1 to wear 195. 3. It also would be nice for the part under you eyes to dip down a little farther, when I had the mask with a way up over my nose the mask was right at the corner of my eyes which was uncomfortable, I had to keep it lower on my nose which made a good chunk of my nose exposed to the cold, it kinda defeated the purpose of the reason I bought the mask.

WARM
I am a travel nurse in Barrow Alaska. That is literally at the top of the United States and one of the coldest places on Earth. It is summer here and the temperatures range from the mid-teens to the high forties. I had been here for two weeks when I noticed that my skin was so chapped from the aggressive wind and dust flying around it began to peel off. I tried using my scarf, a buff, a surgical face mask, and sunscreen without relief from either the biting cold or the injury to my skin. I got this Balaclava as a last resort and now am wishing it was my first. I love it and here is why: Warm, even in a wind chill of low teen weather. Mask extremely breathable while filtering out the majority of dust and dirt flying around. Easy to put on, comfortable to wear. Fits well under my cap. Has a soft inner layer that is very comfortable to wear outside for long periods of time. Withstands light freezing rain. I love this product. Good job!

A Ski Mask in Texas?
I ordered this after the Big Freeze in Feb2021, and haven't worn it except to try it on. I can tell it will keep my ears and face warm in the coldest weather Texas is able to muster. Regardless of how seldom I will have occasion to wear it I can tell that it is a very quality product. It is stitched immaculately and double layered in strategic places. It is made to last a lifetime and keep one toasty in the meanwhile. I don't ski or snowboard, but my doggie will be glad I can stay warm to walk him on the coldest days. He doesn't have a problem with the cold! And Adam and Linda enclosed a cute little Thank You card with my order. Thank you for your attention to detail! UPDATE 27May2022: A year after my original review I have had several occasions to wear it and I was very glad I bought it. On those occasions the temp was in the teens or low 20s. Not the coldest but when a cold front blows thru the Texas Hills the North wind can blow 12-18 knots. It gets terrible cold in those conditions. My dog Gizmo and I were both very grateful for this mask on those few days.

Ski mask
I ordered this face mask for my 8 yr old son. The quality is very good. It's a little lose on him for now but he'll grow into it for the coming years.
