Review: The game that defined your childhood is back and better than ever! - "Heed well my words for I will tell you of times past, of darker days, days when the realm was saved against all hope. For I fear the darkness is about to return...." And it did, in 2022 courtesy of Avalon Hill's re-release of the classic game "Heroquest"! Heroquest is a fantasy adventure set deep within a hidden stone labyrinth. This maze of underground rooms and corridors is controlled by Zargon and the evil sorcerer's forces of dread. Your four valiant heroes have been summoned to do battle with this ancient evil and must descend into a trecherous world of the unknown, restore honour to the realm, and destroy the forces of dread! Heroquest is a game for 2-5 players set across a total of 14 quests, with each quest taking approximately one hour to complete and increasing in difficulty as the game progresses. during a quest your heroes may acquire valuable treasures that can be spent between quests to purchase new weapons, armour, potions, and equipment to assist you with the missions ahead. This is a co-operative game. The aim is not individual success and you will have to work together to defeat the evil sorcerer Zargon and his minions. divided you will fall! This game contains the following: - Gameboard - 31 monster miniatures - 4 hero miniatures -15 pieces of furniture - 21 dungeon doors - 93 game cards - 4 turn order cards - cardboard tiles representing hidden doors/traps etc - quest book - 4 character cards )Barbarian, Elf, Wizard, Dwarf) - game masters screen - pad of character sheets - 6 white combat dice - 2 red movement dice For those who have played the game before the sequence of play and rules haven't changed. For those who are new to heroquest, the rules are relatively simple to pick up and understand. One player must take the role of Zargon and effectively act as the dungeon master (DM), whilst the remaining players each take a character each. If there are less than five players then it is acceptable for a player to control more than one character as the game is optimised for all of the characters to be used in each mission. Each character has several important attributes: - Attack dice. The number of dice the character roles when attacking monsters - Defense dice. The number of dice rolled when defending attacks. - Body points. Reflecting a characters physical constitution and ability to withstand harm. - Mind points. Reflecting a characters wisdom, intelligence, and resistance to magical influence. Characters also start with an item of weaponry each, where as the Wizard may choose three of the four elemental spell decks with the fourth going to the Elf. On any given turn the heroes start. Each hero can move by rolling the two red movement dice (D6) and moving upto the total amount rolled. Each hero can then take one action, such as searching a room for treasures, searching a corridor for traps or hidden doors, attacking a monster, or using a spell. Combat is resolved by the hero rolling their specified number of attack dice, with each skull rolled representing a hit. The monster attacked then responds by rolling their specified number of defense dice, with each shield rolled representing an attack deflected or blocked. For every hit that doesn't get deflected your hero scores one point of damage to the monster, which in most cases will kill them although some monsters have several body points and may require several successful hits to kill them. When searching for treasure there are several possible outcomes. In some locations you may discover special artifacts (as dictated by the quest book). If there are no special items then you must select a card from the treasure deck of cards - but beware - whilst this may reward you with a discovery of gold or valuable trinkets, a full 50% of the cards reveal traps that may harm your hero or wandering monsters who will immediately attack you. Once each hero has completed their moves and actions, it's Zargons turn. Zargon controls every monster revealed on the game board at that given time. Like heroes, monsters may move (although their move is a defined amount rather than 2D6) and make an attack, although some monsters can also cast spells. Monsters do not search rooms, open or close doors, and cannot pass through hero characters. Quests are won by meeting the specific criteria stipulated by the quest book. Between quests all of a characters attributes are returned to their starting levels and the hero may also keep any items, artifacts, or treasures obtained during the mission, with acquired wealth being spent in the armoury if you wish in preparation for the next quest. Despite now being more than 20 years old, Heroquest remains a game that is as easy to play as it is to enjoy. The rules haven't changed in all of this time because they don't need to because it's a timeless formula that works as well today as it did back then. The new models and furniture are of incredible detail and quality, and no assembly is required allowing you to play the game straight out of the box. Speaking of boxes - this one has all the space you need to safely contain all of the games componants without any of them rattling around loose as was the case with the original version of the game. In terms of complaints there's very little to moan about here. The miniatures can be a little fiddly to take out of the plastic blisters that they are contained within in the box, so serious gamers may want to look for a more bespoke storage solution. Apart from that my only real complaint is that the game requires a minimum of two players - a problem in these times of covid - although there are numerous fan-designed rules for solo play online and also an app available for download that allows solo play. At £100 the game is also quite expensive (the original was only about £25), and for that price you can purchase pretty much any table top game system you like, many of which are more complex than this is. Lets be honest though, you don't want to do that - you want to dive back into your childhood and play Heroquest. I'll use my broadsword!!!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Avalon Hills HeroQuest 🛡️⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🛡️
*by *** on 15 February 2024*

Avalon Hill HeroQuest Game System. I have to say that after owning the original HeroQuest back in the day (1989 I think) and lovingly it to death this is still a fantastic game although I miss the look and feel of some of the original features & older miniatures the new ones are just as good in there own right. I should mention that being European im used to the European rule set this new edition heavily features rules from the American/USA edition which i also enjoyed but constantly referring to Morcar as Zargon takes a little more getting used to😬. I have to admit that maybe its because im older but i seem to be enjoying this game much more now than when i was i kid and i used to love this game when i was young. I have to admit this game is quite expensive but it also feels a bit like a collector's item, a lot of attention and detail has gone into not just remaking this classic game but also in the way its packaged. In the old set everything came on old fashioned sprues which had to be cut out using snips in this set everything is set out for you neatly into its own individual indentations keeping everything in excellent condition. Even the back of the trays are reinforced with cardboard and each tray has a lovely hero quest themed sleeve which is a really nice touch. The playing board is also numbered but it doesn't say if its a limited run. My game arrived in perfect condition and the box it came in had been reinforced and that box came in another box which was stuffed with paper packing this item could have been kicked all the way down the street Ace Ventura style and it still would have arrived in perfect condition so a big thank you goes out to those who packaged this item. This is a superb game and perfect for beginners of Tabletop Fantasy Dungeon Crawlers/Adventure Games with Miniatures. Suitable for ages 14 And Up 2-5 Players This game and its expansions Can now be played with just one person via the official downloadable app and third party accessories. 🧙‍♂️🛡️⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🛡️🧙‍♂️ Add ons/expansion packs are also available expanding the game further if wish to take your game to the next level. There is also a massive community out there who are hugely passionate about this game and many welcome new players and are happy to offer help & advice to anyone who wishes it so what are you waiting for grab your copy today 🛡️⚔️🛡️.
