Just for Men Control GX Grey Reducing Shampoo, Gradual Hair Color, 4 fl oz (Packaging May Vary)

"Too good to be true" is what I initially thought, so my expectations were pretty low to start with. But after only 5 daily shampoos, I see a positive difference in the color of my hair. People are noticing too, but I'm getting comments like "did you cut your hair?" or "are you using gel?" or "you look different". So far, no one has guessed that my hair is darker; they think it's something else. Works for me! I thought the coloring phase was going to take the full two weeks but it doesn't look like that's going to happen... I'm almost to the point where I'm going to switch to the maintenance phase, but I want to get a haircut while I'm doing the coloring part to see how that affects the overall appearance. I'm not sure what maintenance will be like - whether it's "use once per week" or not. Everyone's different and maintenance like anything else will likely be a matter of personal experience and preference. Lastly, I'm using the regular formula, not the one with the conditioner. the +conditioner formula was an ADD ON item when I first placed my order, so I just opted for the regular one. I don't really see the need to switch - I like the results with this one so far, and I use a separate conditioner anyway. TIPS & TRICKS: After reading a bunch of reviews on here complaining about different things about the product, I kept those in mind to avoid some of those pitfalls: 4) READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS... This really isn't a tip or a trick, but I read one review where some nincompoop didn't use it daily as directed and then was disappointed with the results - REALLY? There are similar reviews scattered here and there, but here's the point... if you deviate from the manufacturers specific directions don't blame the product because it didn't work. If you DID follow the directions and then it didn't work out for you, then complain. 2) THE PRODUCT TURNS BROWN IN THE TUBE... New tubes seem to have "air" in them (probably nitrogen, or else the oxidation process would be well underway by the time you open it for the first time. To avoid ambient air getting into the tube I "burp" mine before closing the cap. While closed, hold the tube cap up, give it a couple of taps to move the product down into the tube, open the cap, gently squeeze to get any air out, wipe any product off the inner cap, and close. 3) FINGERNAIL STAINING... Unless you wear gloves, this is almost unavoidable. However, you can minimize the problem by washing your hands thoroughly after you apply the product and then again after you rinse it out. 4) SHOWER STAINING... The problem here is that it takes time for any splatter to darken after it's on one surface or another. The bathtub or the the shower is a big area as opposed to say, a kitchen or utility sink making it very hard to thoroughly rinse everywhere. To avoid this I simply take a shower like normal and just wet my hair, then go down to the utility sink and shampoo. Yes, this is a pain in the @#$, but much less so than scrubbing down the shower walls, bathtub, and shower curtain with Tilex® every morning. The utility sink is smaller, and therefore much easier to clean and rinse. So that's it. Suffice it to say I'm hooked - I just ordered my 2nd tube from Amazon because it's cheaper than the huge national chain brick & mortar drug store.

I have been using Control GX since July 2019 and can report that it does the job for me and does it well. After about three weeks of daily use I noticed my grey hair slowly disappearing and replaced by my natural color. The sides were only slightly less grey, but that's ok, it added to the more natural appearance. At that point I decided that that was the look I wanted and now use the product twice per week, a maintenance schedule. Ever so often I add an extra shampooing, just to tweak the look. It's easy and manageable. A couple of important observations and hints: (1) Use plastic or latex gloves in order to avoid the problem of inky finger nails. Do it, it's silly not to. (2) Make certain that your shower stall/bathtub is completely rinsed down after using the product. Occasionally I have noticed some grey residue/streaks on my tile walls the day after use due to a sloppy cleanup, but have not had a problem eliminating the stains with a spray cleanser. (3) Hair Fallout? Not here. While I have noticed that my hair is somewhat more fly-away and softer after using Control GX, it definitely has not caused my hair to fall out or thin. I suspect that the conditioning agent in the shampoo causes a soft and silky feel and thus it appears and/or feels a bit thinner. A hair blowing will help as will a dab of thickening hair product. The next day after resuming the use of my regular shampoo the silky/thin feeling disappeared. (4) I did not notice any dye scent, but you should know that it does have a floral scent which I find a bit cloying. Fortunately the scent does not linger in your hair after rinsing. Bottom line: a GREAT product but not a miracle potion. It won't restore you to the look and vigor of a 20-something year old unless you ARE a 20-something year old, but for me it is definitely effective, safe and easy. Highly recommended.

First off I am a female,I have recently gotten sick of having to dye my hair every two weeks because of how fast it grows. My hair is dark brown but I would say that the regrowth is probably 80% grey (more like white then grey). It grows so fast (though as thin as you can imagine) that 1 week after dying it I see major greys! I saw this product in the store when it first came out and I wondered if it would work or not. About a month or two ago I decided to give it a try and picked it up at the grocery store. The 1st time I used it, I didn't really notice anything but I kept up with it. It works, is it perfect no, not at all. It will miss spots (even if you put the shampoo right there) and you have to keep using it to get a better result, it also is gradual which may be great for some but not for everyone. Granted, I would much prefer to use this than dye my hair every 2 weeks and I will keep using this and just get used to the fact that I will indeed still have greys. It will stain your nails and if your skin near your nails is dry or cracked it will stain that! You will look like you were digging in dirt so you may want to wear gloves. It has a men's cologne type smell to it which does not bother me but could bother some. I use my own conditioner afterwards so it isn't too noticeable. I have extremely thin shoulder length hair so this is my second bottle (I shampoo every other day and occasionally use a normal shampoo since this one doesn't exactly make me feel like my hair is clean). So how long it will last you depends on your hair length, thickness and how many times you shampoo. Way more expensive than my normal shampoo but I don't have to buy hair dye anymore so it balances out. I probably will start using a semi permanent hair dye every 3 months though just to not have any greys for awhile but continue to use this product. Overall, this product is worth a shot as long as you realize it takes some time and you will more than likely still have some grey hairs to contend with.

Okay look, there are a few things you need to know before using this product: 1. First and foremost, I rarely give 5 stars for anything but I am extremely satisfied with this product. For me, it’s the right color and works perfectly with my bathing routine. 2. (I never do..because I’m a dummy) TEST the product on a small area of skin FIRST. No harm in returning it if it doesn’t work for you. 3. This product DOES work. It’s not magic. You will notice a difference even after the first use. Depending upon how many times you use the shampoo is the secret. I could imagine one using this only once a month for a very subtle change in color. I could imagine one using it every other day for dramatic results. 4. You MUST WEAR GLOVES. You can pick these up at any beauty store/walmart/Walgreens/amazon. Never EVER try without as it will stain your fingernails and fingers. Also, guys who work out and have callouses, it will penetrate those and stain as well. Avoid all this by taking the time to put on a parIr of 2 cent gloves. 5. Just like with any hair dye, the longer you leave it In, the more dramatic effect. Personally, I only use when needed and I *never let it sit on my head for longer than 60 seconds. Trust me on this one guys. That is, unless you want to go really dark (and noticeable). I think the point of this product is to gradually lose the grey as opposed to just showing up to work the next day with all the grey magically gone. 6. A little goes a long way. You don’t need anymore than a dime size blob to work. Why waste it? Save yourself some money. 7. For all the people who are claiming it’s making the, bald, personally in call BS, BUT every person is different. Perhaps it’s true it causes hair loss, which is why I suggest you test it before using it. But again, for me, no problems at all with hair loss. 8. Another great thing about the shampoo is it’s no fuss. Just shampoo as normally and presto changeo. I wouldn’t suggest using with another shampoo except to condition it after use. The next day when you’re not using it, shampoo and condition normally of course. 9. Lastly, the fact that the color is *subtle*, I believe is the products strength. Subtlety is key for a lot of guys who don’t want to “look like they dye their hair” (though obviously nothing is wrong with it, even makeup on guys too!) I’m 100% satisfied with this product and will be using it for a while—well, so long as I have hair.

Decided to update my review, as I stuck with the product and wanted to be more accurate. My experience: 1) It does work, but it's more of a toning down of the gray, rather than a darkening or restoration of your original hair color (brown in my case). I find that I need to use the product daily for 2-3 weeks to get the maximum effect. I believe there is a limit.. That is, there is a point where continued use will have no additional effect. Once you're at this max level, daily use is not required. Every few days is enough to maintain. 2) When I get my hair cut, I lose a lot of the effect. My hair looks a lot grayer, and I'm guessing that means the roots of my hair are not as dark as the ends. So after each cut, I have to start all over. 3) The smell is absolutely terrible. It is not even remotely fragrant. It's a harsh, bad chemical smell. I always use a separate conditioner after in order to mask the smell. If I don't, I can smell it on myself all day, even with a thorough rinse. 4) It can stain your fingernails or cracks of skin in your hands, however it's really not that bad. I apply as I would regular shampoo and quickly rinse and have no issues. 5) I did not experience any adverse effects like hair loss or burning scalp. That's it. Overall I'd say its worth it. I'm not nearly as gray as I was, but it's also not as brown as I'd like it.

I'm probably like most guys over 50 in that I've lost hair as well as most that remain have turned gray. In the past, I've used Grecian Formula and Just for Men, both products worked well but with continued use over time, worked less well. The Grecian Formula eventually gave the gray hair a dull blonde look, not at all compatible with the black hair I started life with. I stopped both products and within 6 months my hair was cloud white, very little black left. Certainly made me feel frustrated and old and without any options. But I heard about Control GX and resisted buying it, but after reading some of the other reviews here I thought why not? So I have to now say this is as close to a perfect product for men with gray hair as I've ever found. And as it works like a shampoo, it's certainly easy enough to use. One application is enough to start a noticeable change. In order to reach a desired state, which for me was about half and half between black and white, took an application every few days for about two weeks. Afterwards to maintain has taken about once a week or once every ten days. The black looks credible and the gray that's left is proper gray, not the dull blond of before. I can't vouch for the long term solution yet, as I've only used this for several months, but I have to say pretty amazing at this point. Some one on here said they used it on their beards and mustaches but I have tried that with no success. So if that's your thought, I would say this won't touch up a beard or mustache. However, if it's top of the head stuff, don't wait. And a very reasonable price for a product that lasted several months before I used it up.

BE VERY CAREFUL USING THIS PRODUCT. If you could even *potentially* be allergic to "black henna" or anything that is used in hair dyes do NOT use this product. Or at least do not use it with bare hands. When I first started using this product it worked great. I had no problems or odd effects of any kind. NO allergic reactions, etc. After using this product for about 3 months I woke up one morning with pain in left hand I had swelling in the knuckles and unable to close my hand completely. I figured I just slept on it wrong. I started taking ibuprofen in the morning and briefly it helped. Then the pain and swelling got progressively worse. I couldn't figure out what it was. My doctor sent me to a rheumatologist to see if it was autoimmune. That doctor had no idea.. no tests said I had anything autoimmune-related. However an MRI showed significant inflammation in the joints in my left hand. So on a lark I started eliminating things from my daily routine.. coffee.. out.. various foods I had been eating.. finally I stopped using the shampoo. 3 weeks later the pain was mostly gone and most of the swelling was as well. I added everything *else* back into my routine. Still the same. I even sent that speciallist the list of ingredients IN THIS PRODUCT and even THEY said nothing in that list jumped out at them as a possibility for any kind of allergic reaction (in spite of black henna being in the list).. Finally - I re-added the shampoo. One day later my left hand was in agony and I couldn't move it. I have stopped using the shampoo.. I threw all of it away.. Finally after 4 months *most* of the problems I had have completely gone.. I say most because I still have some residual discomfort but it still slowly gets better. Lesson learned - a little personal vanity wasn't worth the loss of my hands. I personally would not recommend *anyone* use this product at *all*. I've used other over the counter hair dyes and NONE of them caused the problems this did. Be safe and avoid it.

This product surprised me. I wasn't expecting it to work as well as it does. After the first couple uses I didn't really notice much change but, by the end of the first week, it was quite noticeable. I had problems with skin irritation with other hair coloring products but have not had any issues with this product. My hair is pretty short so I use it 3 or 4 times a week to keep up with new growth. I know the instructions indicate it is only for use on the head, but I've been using on my facial hair as well with good results. Typically, I wash my hair and beard with regular shampoo, rinse, then apply the control gx. I leave it in for 2 minutes then rinse well. I have never had color transfer to my towels or pillows. I have had it stain my shower if some dripped onto the shower and I didnt catch it, but mostly it rinses off just fine. A little Clorox bathroom cleaner takes it off just fine if I do get a stain. I did have some darkening of my fingernails on the hand I use to apply the shampoo...not always but occasionally. I now use an exam glove to prevent the discolored nails. Works great. I could probably get by without the glove if I were more careful with not using the fingertips to apply the shampoo but the glove is easier. It's still way less hassle than using traditional hair color products. The scent is not too strong and is completely gone after rinsing. I have been using the control gx regularly for nearly 2 years and couldn't be more pleased with the results. Initially I bought 1 each of the shampoo and shampoo with conditioner. My hair is quite short and the conditioner didn't seem to have any additional benefit for me, so I have been using the shampoo only. The control gx is easy and effective. The 2 minutes I leave it on is the perfect time to brush my teeth so it really takes very little extra time and gives me a much more natural looking result than traditional hair color products.

Ya he comprado este producto repetidas veces con muy buenos resultados. Tengo el cabello natural casi blanco, y me gusta darle solamente un leve "salt and pepper look". Lo dejo puesto 5 minutos una vez por semana y con eso tengo, por lo que el shampoo (con pelo bastante corto) me dura meses. Compré el mismo "shampoo" en la Comer, más caro y con la leyenda en español.. no sé si la fórmula del de la Comer sea idéntica, pero me pareció de menor calidad y con tendencia a producir efectos más rojizos. Probé también el producto para pelo más claro, pero ese sí definitivamente dio unos tonos demasiado rojizos a la luz del sol, y varias personas me preguntaron si algo le había hecho a mi cabellera, por lo que descontinué su uso. No tengo ese problema con este. Por algo recibió honores como "Mejor Producto del 2018".
