Great value for the price
You can spend less on a compression tester, and you can spend more, but this unit hits the sweet spot when it comes to quality, functionality, and price. It has the adapters that most people will need, an extension hose for when the plugs are deep in the engine compartment, and best of all, a decent case to keep everything in. The paper label doesn't bother me; it's a good place to write your name, so you can spot it in your friend's shop after he's borrowed it :-). And if you do need an exotic plug adapter in the future, the quick disconnect unit on this unit makes it simple to integrate.

Convenient, versatile kit. Quality slightly lacking
This kit works great in tight engine compartments due to the short 14mm/18mm threaded end to air hose adapter it includes. The adapter is the reason I bought this particular kit. Without this adapter I wouldn’t have been able to test the compression on my engine. I will also use the adapter to pressurize the cylinder and replace valve stem seals. The red blow-mold case is also quite nice.I’m only giving 4 stars because of 2 reasons: 1) the gauge seems light and flimsy. I don’t expect it to last a lifetime but it is suitable for occasional use. 2) I had never heard of Shankly before buying this product. I googled Shankly and their website boasts that all of their products are made in the USA. Upon receiving this kit, I see a sticker right on top of the case that states “made in China.” I feel misled by Shankly.Overall, I am satisfied with the product and its price.

a compression tester is an excellent way, to test the life of your engine
I bought this so that I could test the compression of all of my small engine equipment. Incase you didn't know, a compression tester is an excellent way, to test the life of your engine, weather it be a lawn mower, or a car. All I had to do was remove the sparkplug, then thread the tester into the hole, then crank or pull start the engine, and within seconds I had a reading. The compression tester comes with an extension hose that uses a quick coupler design, and also a couple of adapter fittings. Since the stock hose is pretty short, I think your all going to want to use the extension, as I did for all of my machines. The tester comes with a built in pressure relief valve, this is nice because it makes it easy to remove the tester off the engine after getting a compression reading. Nothing about this tester feels cheap. The rubber hoses are solid, as are the brass fittings. The gauge itself has a nice rubber protective overmold, so if it gets kicked or banged around, it won't damage it. The front half of the gauge is made of glass, so I appreciate the durability that has to offer. As far as the gauges accuracy, I tested 8 engines in my workshop, and the readings I got are exactly what I expected for A, either a brand new engine, or B, an old worn engine. The adapter fittings are 14mm and 18mm, so that covers a wide range of engines, weather it be small engines, cars, trucks, RV's, boats, you name it. As far as the testers ability to hold pressure, the seals are very solid, although its recommended to use an oil on the threads to help them seal anyways. As long as the engine itself wasn't loosing compression, I found that the tester helled the pressure reading until I released it with the relief valve. This tester was very easy to use, I highly recommend it. I give it a solid 5 out of 5!

Quality is very average
Worked for my one time use, for the price I guess I shouldn't complain but it feels pretty cheap to me. The pressure release valve on mine seemed messed up. I had to repeatedly tap on the button to get the pressure to drop. On the plus side the case is nice and has a decent amount of sizes

Shadetree mechanic? Hobbyist? Avid DIYer? Love wrenching?
If any of those criteria apply to YOU, then this tool is the tool for YOU. I would recommend this tester because I am a hobbyist wrench monkey! My first impression from opening it up was "Hmm, ok, not bad. Its not the BEST material, but it has been adequately designed to survive compression pressures from an engine. How long will it last?" I would probably invest in a higher grade unit if I owned a mechanic shop, but if you just need this like, 4-5 times a year, its good value. The hoses.. First letd start off there. The hoses are no el cheapo hose from autozone. They are flexible yet durable. Built for application. The hose ends are crimped on properly. The gauge looks simple to read, and easy to understand. The threaded adapter fittings are of good quality with strong threads, dimensionally precise pitch and pattern. I used it to obtain a compression test using the wet and dry method. To my delight, my engine was a happy healthy one! I read uniform pressures within 5%, in acceptable factory defined range, and the wet oil test also came in within close range of eachother. Meaning, my piston rings are solid. Makes sense since my motor I swapped in only has 60k miles. Its an 05 motor. Not bad at all. Anyways, not to stray from the topic but unless you have a professional shop and require heavy usage, get this. It will do just fine, without you punching the wall from overpaying on other brands. And then going to the doc to "Snap On" your fingers again. Happy wrenching!

Buy multiple
These things work great, nice rubberized gauge for abusive people like me.Be careful overtightening them, but if you do and the thread moves away from the joint, just push it in hard and itll come out.Seem to be quite accurate too.

Good for the price
This is great for the price. The included hard case is also very nice and holds all the pieces well. It works well, and includes several adapters. One of the adapters I received has the bolt off center. The threads are also a bit rough and didn't go into the cylinder head as smoothly as I would have hoped, but didn't seem to damage it either. Overall, the quality is reasonably good for the price, and it fit my application well.
