Galil Organic Roasted Chestnuts, Pack of 6, 3.5 oz Bags, Shelled Chestnut, Chestnuts Roasted Peeled

Fell in love with them when I was visiting Australia. Left Australia but the love for the chestnuts came back with me.

I've had these before from a local grocery store, so I knew the texture and wetness of them. Theses packs are easy to have a healthy and fulfilling snack on the go. They soft, a little chewy and slightly sweet. I did not notice a smell or any freshness issues. I think it's a good size and value for the price, too.

I ordered these (Galil) and another brand (Wang), both brands organic, shelled and ready to eat. For both brands, the size of individual chestnuts is about the same, small (after all, these are 'des chataignes', not 'des marrons', which would be much larger); the color varies: each pack had some dark brown chestnuts and some much lighter in color (beige). The Galil looked damp ('slimy' if you like); the Wang were dry; I put both kinds in the microwave to reheat them; after that, the two kinds looked identical, and tasted the same (very good -- I will have some more for dinner). ------------- Added May 29, 2024 - About the 'slime', i.e. the humidity covering the fruit: I assume it is due to the packaging (a closed bag made of some plastic material) and 'all you have to do' is reheat the chestnuts in the microwave; or in a warm regular oven -- if you are also cooking something else -- or just in a frying pan). These, by the way, are not the roasted chestnuts you might buy from a street vendor in some European cities, which would be simply roasted and might not be suitable for packaging in small bags (they would be too dry, I think). These, I suspect, are first lightly steamed or boiled, and then roasted, and therefore not as dry as those sold on the streets. I eat mine sometimes as a snack, and more often as part of my dinner -- added to some beans or leftover rice, warmed up in a hot frying pan (after warming the pan, add the whole dinner, and turn off the heat; then wait a few minutes before eating). If you think that is too bland, add a dash of Nando's piri-piri sauce. Bon appetit ! P.S. -- Try them also with bacon.

Bland, flavorless and disappointing. They didn't even taste like chestnut. I made a chestnut bisque with 4 out of the 6 packages and there was no chestnut flavor. So I tasted a "fresh" one out of another package. Tasted like sawdust. Do not buy, there are so many other great options. A total waste of money that will ruin whatever dish you put it in.

Good flavor, enjoy them for a snack. Worth the price.

Chestnuts are very good for you. Really wanted this and not disappointed. Great taste - even right out of the package. Love with mustard.

You know the tender, sweet umami flavor of fresh roasted chestnuts over a fireplace? These are it. Except nothing is burnt. Somehow they've captured the perfect point of doneness and packed it in a vacuum sealed bag to be enjoyed all year long. It's fantastic! I love it. My hamsters love it. They're not dry. They're not chalky. They're all that perfect smooth texture and luxurious richness of a freshly roasted chestnut that I can't find anywhere else. Anyone who has had real roasted chestnuts know it can be tricky to get them to the perfect level of roasted. They're supposed to be tender when you finally crack open the shell. Think of a pressure cooker cooking rice. It's supposed to be tender and a little moist. I've tried a few brands of roasted chestnuts but these are the best. BTW they're great in salads, added to gravy for mashed potatoes, in pasta dishes, a side of brie with roasted chestnuts and French bread, or just chestnuts with berries is great too. They taste great by themselves too.
