how would you get the tree stand which is almost a rectangle; in the collare which is at the top 18 inche in the top of opening?

If I understand your question, the tree collar comes in pieces. You build it by wrapping it around your tree and tree stand.

how does this stay up with just a top and bottom tube?

It is very light weight and the tubing in the top and bottom just make it stable enough to stand on it's own.
