Gringo: My Life on the Edge As an International Fugitive

I couldn't put it down!
In his memoir, Gingo: My Life on the Edge as an International Fugitive, Dan “Tito” Davis tells his incredible story of fleeing the United States. After being accused of a crime he did not commit, Tito decides to live as a fugitive, and eventually ends up with a story so incredible it is difficult to believe it is true. The story starts with Tito’s humble background in South Dakota. While in college, Tito starts “legally” trafficking a drug called White Cross. The trafficking money opens up a world of luxury for Tito, and he marries a young woman from an influential family. The authorities eventually catch Tito for trafficking; however, due to his connections, he is set free after serving a short sentence. When the FBI finds an old acquaintance to help frame Tito for a different crime, Tito decides to flee the country rather than spending the foreseeable future in prison. As a fugitive, Tito must figure out how to find money, shelter, and food, along with passports and other documents.Over the course of the next ten years after becoming a fugitive, Tito’s adventures take him through Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, and even Indonesia and India. There is never a dull moment in this book, and you will find yourself turning page after page, obsessed with finding out what happens next and how the story ends. The immersive story includes humor, love, compassion, tragedy and bizarre experiences. While on the run, Tito still manages to find himself a new family, a wife, a legal business, and a home—or so he thinks. The book has an incredible message about humanity, and Tito manages to paint everyone in the story from drug lords to the destitute in a realistic and empathetic light. The story also casts a dark perception about how law enforcement can become tainted by anything from corruption to political vendettas.I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. There is nothing that I disliked about this book, other than the loss of sleep from refusing to put it down. The book is well-edited, and I did not find any spelling or grammar errors. I recommend this book to teenagers, adults, world travelers. Additionally, I encourage anyone who believes that they are accurately able to judge people to read this book. If anyone has ever hinted that you rely too much on stereotypes, then this book is for you. This story teaches us that we never fully know someone’s story and that even if we did, it might be too difficult to believe.

The Most Intense Read of My Life
I don't typically enjoy reading memoirs. I'm just not a "slice of life" type of person. This book, however, is hands down the single most thrilling, intense read I've ever picked up. Right away I was interested in getting to read into the life of someone involved in the illegal drug trades, and seeing just how perilous life on the lam could be. Funnily enough, though, I was mostly hooked just from seeing that Tito hailed from a small town in the Black Hills, not far from where I grew up and lived a majority of my life.Seeing actual towns I had been to or lived in mentioned in the beginning of the book and later throughout was such a rare and exciting treat. People who grow up in the Midwest RARELY ever see their home represented in media, so this was a big deal for me.I was ensnared by Tito and Conti's writing, and enjoyed the appropriately fast-pace as the reader was walked through Tito's humble upbringing and thrown headfirst into his chaotic, unbelievable life of wealth, heartbreak, and crime. I think I was most surprised to find that I actually sympathized with Tito, as he described his youth. It was especially interesting to see how caring, thoughtful, and driven he was, not through his dialogue, but through his actions. This book did an excellent job of showing and not telling the audience about the subject. It was also edited exceptionally well, and I only found a handful of really basic errors throughout.I applaud the hardwork of Tito and Peter Conti, and wish them both well. The ended was really so somber and appropriately abrupt that I found myself staring at the final pages for awhile as if hoping that more words would appear. I will be hard pressed to find another memoir quite like this, and I highly recommend this compelling, action-packed read to anyone who is a fan of crime, thrillers, and even history! Be warned that there is a lot of adult content in the book, and many mature themes as is to be expected when dealing with the life of a fugitive. You can find my full review on OnlineBookClub.org where my screen name is SavannaEGoth.

True Story about a Different World
"Tito" is a creature of "will overcomes all". Unfortunately in this case "will" overcomes the law, relationships, family, international borders and any good thing in his path. It all works until the inevitable happens, jail, deaths, lost fortunes and more. Well written, a tale that provides an insight into what can be accomplished by sheer will. A primer on how to build a criminal empire.

A Captivating Life Story
Dan "Tito" Davis has lived a life I've only had exposure to via HBO TV shows. This book escalates in tension and wow-factor all the way through. There are a few moments that could have done with some editing and the odd typo that a round of proof-reading will easily fix. Overall, this is a page-turner that kept me hooked.
