The ratio is 1 1/4 cups more water than rice (2 cups rice, 3 1/4 cups water; 5 cups rice, 6 1/4 cups water, etc.) and it comes out perfect every time. I believe for white rice it is 1/2 cup more water than rice, the brown rice requires more water. I tried to make from instructions using the lines in the cooker but that wasn't accurate so I use this ratio and it is perfect. It takes a lot longer than our previous rice cooker, but really not too bad. By the time you start the rice, everything else that's being prepared comes out about the same time. I do feel it's a little awkward to clean sometimes as the condensation gathers around the lid area but I've learned to clean it then leave open on the counter overnight to dry and put away in the morning.
