I have lately become fascinated with a new technique some wood turners are using to damaged, pinky, or cracked wood. Instead of discarding these pieces or just filling the cracks with fillers, they’re using a mix or epoxy or CA glue and colored mica powders like these. It’s sort of like the Japanese craft of Kintsugi, in which broken pottery was repaired with gold to bring attention to the defects rather than cover them up. I’ve just started to experiment with this technique on scrap using these mica powders. They’re very inexpensive- it works out to 20 cents for each package- and the colors are vibrant. It only takes a tiny amount to give color to a crack or void.
