Great book about a man who was one of the historical figures in AMC's "Turn" series. If you like this book or the Turn series you will also want to read:1. A Journal of the Operations of the Queen's Rangers from the End of the Year 1777, to the Conclusion of the Late American War (1789)2. The Life and Times of General John Graves Simcoe, Commander of the "Queen's Rangers" During the Revolutionary War (1890)3. Journal of Major Robert Rogers4. The Life of Robert Rogers (1914)5. The Fate of Major André: A Letter from Alexander Hamilton to John Laurens6. Major André's Journal7. The Life and Career of Major John André: Adjutant-general of the British Army in America (1861)8. Peggy Shippen, The Traitorous Belle of the American Revolution: Brief Historical Accounts of Mrs. Benedict Arnold9. The Secret Spy Service of the American Revolution (1882)10. Conspiracy of Arnold and Sir Henry Clinton against the United States and against General Washington (1817)

Short and easy to read! Great for history nerds and fans of the AMC show TURN!
Some typos here and there, but spaced out in a way that is easy to read and not feel overwhelmed with information. I love the slight nod to Abraham Hoodhull that Benjamin Tallmadge wrote when talking about the "correspondence" in New York in 1778, a year before Robert Townsend became the permanent agent stationed in New York. I am reading this memoir with my Washington's Spies (by Alexander Rose) book close by so I can look things up, such as dates and names. I love this history and the events that took place that allowed for America to declare its independence and ultimately become a strong military force. I also love Benjamin Tallmadge. He is a historical hero of mine, for sure!

"I was gratified by this offer...and decided at once to lay aside my books and take up the sword in defense of my country."
Tale of a true American hero from the Revolutionary War period written in a surprisingly readable fashion. I'm ashamed to admit I never heard of this fellow prior to the book, but given his interactions with Gen George Washington and his shear guts in many military engagements I came to really appreciate his story and now find myself hungering for more material on the subject of the American Revolutionary War and those that fought for its' cause. Very good book and I did enjoy!

Watch TURN first (if you're not an historian), so you know who Tallmadge was and his role. Then the book will make sense.
After watching TURN, I was interested in this man. He seemed to be the most level-headed, committed Patriot fighting for America. This book has meaning if you are aware of who Tallmadge was and the role he played before, during and after the Revolution. I believe that if I had not seen TURN, the book would have had little meaning to me. It skirts much of the intrigue and the danger that he faced, instead showing his insights in a matter-of-fact way, almost as if he were narrating a story about someone else. Don't expect this to be a spy thriller.

Great book. The details of some battles in the revolutionary war were very impressive, which I had never read about before. They also show the genius of General Washington. Col. Benjamin Tallmadge was also the leader of the Culper Spy Ring. There is not much about it in the book, though.

This is a wonderful first-hand account by one of the key soldiers in the Revolutionary War. A deeply personal, and at timesemotional, accounting given to us about what can be accomplished in the time of need. I like that he does not overly glamorize his adventures and instead shares his critical contributions to winning the war as a recounting of factual events. The ending had me teary-eyed. He took me back to his time and made me feel the enormity of his generation’s incredible accomplishment.

I liked the book for what it did tell me about fighting alongside George Washington during the Revolution, but I also wanted to hear about Tallmage's work constructing the spy ring during the war, and that was completely left out.

Unique
A very good recollection of the eight year American Revolution. Full of brief notes, the volume is best read with a detailed atlas close at hand.Richard, Sausalito, California
