Q: Is this considered canvas.?

No, it is not a canvas fabric. It is a thick polyester and looks like and feels like a thick Neoprene. It seems much stronger, smoother and softer against the skin than canvas would be. It seems to be a very well constructed and strong sling. My husband is totally incapacitated and I feel that he is safe and secure in this sling. It is also machine washable.

Q: is there a size chart available

Yes if you look above at the product pictures it’s the fifth picture if you scroll through them. It will show the measurements for the two different sizes (medium & large).

Q: Where should the handle loops be positioned behind a patient? I am being told they should be at the neck or above the head.

We have them at the shoulder. When we put the patient in the chair, someone is behind lifting up on the sling to keep her sitting straight up as we lower her into her chair. We double loop the bottom and only loop the top once.

Q: Can the sling be used to lift patient manually, without the machine?

Yes, it can be used to manually move a patient, however it will be difficult as patients that are not mobile are dead weight and will require at least 4 people. Also suggested are back braces for those lifting the patient.
