Won't work until returned for software upgrade!!!!
This was purchased and was being connected to a new Standard Horizon Radio and didn't work. Returned it for a replacement and it didn't work. I called Standard Horizon and was told that they failed to upgrade the software on all the CMP31's! Didn't matter where you purchased it, all of them needed a software upgrade. I had to return the unit at "my" cost to their service department in California. West Marine can't do the upgrade, and all marine electronic services in my area couldn't do it either. It still hasn't been returned to me and it's been 2 weeks. It's frustrating that they are aware of the problem and haven't recalled them. I'm sure it's to save money on shipping!

You You can only use this with compatible SH radios. Frees up a VHF antenna for most people (AIS)
You can only use this with compatible SH radios. The display is small, but nice to have a backup AIS "Radar" display in the FB. Plus, you have all of the other features of the main radio without adding a second radio or, IMPORTANT" a second antenna. For me, this replaced a second older VHF in the Flybridge that was not working correctly. By using this mic, I was able to re-purpose the old VHF antenna for a AIS transponder!!!!! Double winner, chicken dinner.

Essential extension mic and speaker.
Easy to install and all functions of the radio can be selected apart from AIS which has to be selected from the GX2200 vhf. Once on it displays on the RAM3 and AIS info can be selected. Built in speaker can be turned up independently of vhf speaker.

Premature failure
This microphone failed very prematurely, after three years of very light use, mostly covered, protected from the elements. Standard Horizon repair charges are within $30 of the cost of a new one!

Curious what’s in the box?
I needed a remote mic for my sailboat but couldn’t tell from the description how you connect it to the radio and if this was really the solution I was looking for. So for everyone considering buying this take a look at the pictures - here’s what’s in the box. (Yes, it comes with a 23 foot long extension cable to go from the ratio to the cockpit or other remote part of the boat. )
