For the price, this is a decent knife.
There seems to be a lot of confusion on the "Damascus" pattern for this piece. I just want to offer that if a damascus build isn't etched in ferric chloride and darkened in something similar to coffee you don't get the high contrast pattern like I'm sure some of you see on TV knife making shows and were expecting. A lot of low-quality damascus patterns like that which you would find at Wal-Mart have been processed in a way that tricks the naïve eye. The one I received is definitely forged. It has a low layer count (50-70) but, it's not stamped on there as some in the comments have claimed. So far the knife has held its edge well even through chopping bone and being dropped to hard tile. No, it's not a custom Jason Knight, Steve Schwarzer, or Burt Foster knife. It's not a Wusthof, William Henry or Henckels. BUT, it's a decent knife. I enjoy using it.

Beautiful and incredibly sharp
The media could not be loaded. Damascus steel knives are the only way to go when purchasing knives. I got this for my daughter to replace the dull Chef's knife she had. She's been taking cooking classes and really needed a high quality chef's knife. She loves to use my Shun's knives, but I didn't want to spend that much. After some research, I chose this one because it has a 60-62 HRC Japanese VG-10 premium steel cutting core and the price was great. The use of a high quality steel is essential for a top quality knife that's durable enough to last for years and years and years to come. I'm astounded at how well this works. I actually like it more than my Shun chef's knife and it's much prettier. It's extremely well balanced and the attention to detail is evident. The curved handle is ergonomically designed and fits in my hand perfectly. I can use this for a long period of time without my hand tiring or cramping. It is also non-slip, so I don't have any issues with it slipping. The blade is EXTREMELY sharp, so be careful. It cuts through steak, pork butt, ribs, basically anything with ease. It's like cutting through butter. It comes in a nice black box that's perfect for gift giving. This would make an awesome wedding present. If you're looking for high quality Damascus steel knives, you can stop looking. This knife won't disappoint.

Good enough for the cost
Seems well made, it’s made in China but that’s ok considering the cost. Does what you’d expect, I think the steel is ok as far as knife steel goes. And no it’s not real Damascus, which usually won’t take a sharp edge anyway. The Damascus stuff is a sales gimmick and usually just plain forged steel is better as long as it’s 59 RC hardness or better

Worth the Cost
This is a really good knife for the cost. I wish that the blade had been acid washed so that I could see the layers better, but otherwise it's great! The first knife I ordered came in bent, but I returned it and the replacement works fine. I'm really happy with this purchase and am getting another one for my girlfriend. Definitely recommend it!

Sharpest knife I own
I thought my $30 knife was good but wow, this made slicing everything with ease. It’s lighter than my other knife and easier to maneuver. I started slicing paper and it’s just like those infomercials where it cuts without tearing. Then I tried it on anything else I found in the kitchen and my wife angrily asked why I cut up the banana. It’s because it cuts like butter!!The knife is full tang, which means the metal extends all the way to the handle. The handle is wood, so don’t put this in your dish washer! The Damascus have pretty unique patterns on the blade and supposedly much stronger because the steel is pressed together.Great knife! Hand wash it and dry it to keep it long lasting.

This is the third 8 Inch chef knife I've bought from Amazon
The media could not be loaded. This knife is absolutely beautiful and the favourite of my three knives without question. To give you a bit of background, I'd previously bought an expensive knife that was falsely advertised as Damascus steel, It turned out to be a very heavy laser printed knock off. In hindsight, It wasn't worth the price tag I payed for it. I then decided to buy a lighter 8 inch knife which just didn't feel right either. This knife hoewever is top drawer and just perfect. The balance for a start is exactly where you'd expect, on the join from the handle to the knife itself, the handle is crafted out of two peices of solid wood, sanded down to perfection, It makes holding the knife incredibly comforteable. When the handle is wet, the wood goes darker in colour and the grip is slightly better as opposed to smooth, small touch but I find it very aesthetic, although this is an obvious sign this knife will need proper treatment to prevent the handle from degrading over time. Now moving on to the most import part, the knife blade. It's made of high quality metal (V10 Stainless steel) which gives you the hardness of carbon steel but with the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. It is without a doubt the sharpest knife I've ever used, I managed to cut myself on my thumb quite deeply with the slighest graze. You can 100% Tell it's genuine damascus steel, If you look closely in the pictures alongside this review, you'll see the very slight 3d ridge, which could not be copied with a lazer printer and it clearly well forged. (sorry about the excessive amount of photographs, I find It just so pretty)Now... the toughness test. I've tested this knife on frozen goods; fruit, vege & all kinds of other kinds of materials, like cardboard and plastic. There is absolutely no sign of wear and tear to the blade, even after dropping it onto a tiled kitchen floor... which completely amazed me. Over a week of heavy use, best of all it makes quick and easy work of anything you're trying to cut, the only downside is the fact It is shredded my plastic chopping board with lines. Will have to be investing in a decent wooden chopping board to get this knife in it's element. Please feel free to take a look at my video representation of this blade and If you've found my review helpful, I'd really appreciate a helpful vote so I know I've helped somebody out there!

Luxurious Kitchen Tool
The media could not be loaded. This has to be the best knife I own. I recently started upgrading my kitchen products and have invested in a couple of kitchen knives. This one, just feels and looks like a good quality knife. I made a little video (that's my job in real life) and I probably did not pick the best food to demonstrate the knife. I have used it almost every day since I bought it, I am loving it, but I wonder if it can even do better than what I use it for. So, in my opinion, this knife would be ace even for the more experienced cook or chef. I use it for meat and vegetables; it cuts through everything with ease. I especially love the feel of the wooden handle, it is smooth and makes me feel like a professional when I am using it.

Sharp knife, Damascus pattern looks like it was stuck or painted on
The knife is sharp out of the box. How long it stays that way depends on how often you use it and how you look after it.The Damascus pattern looks pretty, but it does not look like it is part of the blade, more like something added to it, either laminated or etched on. Looking at the spine from the top down, there is no pattern on the metal where you would expect it to continue from one side to the other if the pattern was part of the metal. Unfortunately it is just pretty patterns stuck on two sides of the blade. Hopefully it won’t flake off like the coloured knives I had before.I’m not sure what the handle is made out of. On the box it came in, it says wood, but on here it says it’s made of a g10 material which is a fiberglass laminate, probably made to look like wood. The knife is sharp and does look good, but I don’t think it is a Damascus knife with a solid wood handle like many of the reviewers on here seem to suggest.

Mutton dressed as Lamb
This is a middle tier priced knife that is all looks and no substance.Negatives1. The blade isn't sharpened and uses a western style double edge at a wide angle, rather than the Japanese one-sided edge with a tight angle.2. Rivets are not flush with the handle and the wooden scales are ill fitted, so the tang has its edges exposed which catch on your hand and is only useable in a pinch grip which is light on the palm.Positives1. Ergonomics wise, the handle and blade are very easy to hold, and the curves fit my hands very well. If it wasn't for the above quality issues with the scales and rivets, it has the potential to be very comfortable.2. Looks amazing from a distance, if you never plan to actually use this knife, it looks attractive and the polish on the metal and scales is really well done. The Damascus effect looks like it may have been acid etched, meaning it is artificial, but that is expected at this price point.Final ThoughtsMutton dressed as Lamb it looks good from the outside but once you get underneath you realize it is all for show.
