A Beautiful Mess

Pyrokardia’s collection is the first of its kind that I have read from a Nigerian writer. This is a book written endlessly about love that is thought provoking and filled with genuine human emotions. This collection is what I will call a manual to love and a precaution or remedy for broken-hearts. It is a collection that most individuals can genuinely resonate with. It is an out pour of authenticity, creativity and consistency. My best poem from this collection is on page 20 of the book. It is titled I’m fine. It is a poem that I guarantee that everyone who gets this book will enjoy. This poem was a flawless display of what it means to be and feel human. It testifies to how skilled we are in hiding a million words, thoughts and feelings under the cloak of these words “I’m fine.” When people ask “How are you?” These days, it is not about answering the question truthfully but answering as expected. Ogunfowodu Olufemi’s words also answered one of my fears in writing. The fear in repeating ideas. Although this book has about two reoccurring themes, every page and poem is different. He writes in such a way like how a lover’s “I love you” will always sound new even when you have heard it a million times and it is so satisfying. While reading this book, I thought to myself that the worth of this book was understated by the cost. Pyrokardia is like Tolu Akinyemi (Author of Your Father Walks Like a Crab and I laugh at these skinny Girls) who gives provoking ideas through inexpensive and easy access to readers. It is a collection that I will read over and over again and perhaps steal words from to write letters to my loved ones.

To say that this book is beautiful would be a gross understatement. pyrokardia has a way with words that is astounding, he is easily capable of taking ones breath away...again and again with each new page. His heart is written so vividly on the pages of A Beautiful Mess and to read it is mesmerizing. Poetry is clearly not dead and pyrokardia shows us that in this book, with every word. You will most certainly fall in love upon reading this book. I found his heartbeat within the pages and each time I read it again, I feel the pumping of my heart changing to keep time with his own. I cannot say enough about this work of art except that it has stolen my thoughts and inspires my heart to continue to beat. This is more than a review, this is a love note written on a thank you card to pyrokardia. I would buy it again. And again.

I've just begun reading, after having read some poetry of his on Instagram. Definitely identify with so many of these beautiful words. Really adore the book.

This is a wonderful book of poetry about Love, Life, & the journey. Exceptional work by a wonderful Poet. I can't wait to read more.
