Question 1

Will these channels hold a double layer of 5/8” drywall on a ceiling? They look like they may not be strong enough.

Accepted Answer

I only did 1 sheet but I also did a drop ceiling for fiber optics. I feel they should hold it but I can tell you from experience

Question 2

Can you use this to glue to cardboard which is then taped to the wall so can move it later?

Accepted Answer

I would say you could but would not be ideal. I would rather put velcro strips to attach to wall.

Question 3

Could this be used to seal around electric and plumbing cut outs in the ceiling? And how big of a gap can this be used to fill?

Accepted Answer

You would be better off with the pre cut sheets than trying to fill with this product

Question 4

How many square feet will one box cover?

Accepted Answer

You can easily calculate coverage. A box contains twenty-four 8-foot lengths of channel. You have to figure at least two lengths of channel per 8-foot by 4-foot section of sheetrock—one about 4 to 6 inches from the top of the sheetrock and one about 4 to 6 inches from the bottom of the sheetrock. For added strength, you'll probably want a channel strip across the middle. That adds up to three 8-foot lengths of channel per sheet of sheetrock. For even more support, you may want to use four 8-foot sections of channel per sheet of sheetrock. So, if you know the size of the room that you intend to cover, you can figure out the number of channel strips needed.

If you're considering the resilient channel for a soundproofing project, there are many considerations other than the number of channels needed. I suggest a visit to soundproofing.org before you start buying channel and sheetrock. Just hanging sheetrock from channel, even double layers of sheetrock, isn't going to be all that effective at eliminating unwanted sound transmission or resonance. There are even instructional videos out there, produced by craftsmen who are adept at soundproofing. A few hours reading and watching profession soundproofing videos may save you a lot of headaches and regret.
